\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Las vi\u00f1as del Se\u00f1or son nuestras almas, que \u00c9l nos ha dado para que las cultivemos con buenas obras, a fin de que un d\u00eda seamos admitidos en la gloria eterna. Muchos viven como si no fueran a morir nunca, o como si no tuvieran que dar cuenta a Dios de su vida, como si no existiera el Cielo ni el infierno. Creen, pero no reflexionan. Se ocupan todo lo posible de los asuntos mundanos, pero no atienden a la salvaci\u00f3n de sus almas. Oh Dios m\u00edo, \u00bfcu\u00e1l ser\u00e1 mi suerte? Si puedo perderme, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 no abrazo una vida que me asegure la vida eterna?<\/p>

Meditaci\u00f3n I:
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 San Pablo dice:\u00a0Os rogamos, hermanos. . . que os ocup\u00e9is de vuestros propios asuntos<\/em>. - (1 Tes. iv., 10). El mayor n\u00famero de personas en el mundo est\u00e1 atento a los negocios de este mundo. \u00a1Cu\u00e1nta diligencia no emplean para ganar un pleito o una buena posici\u00f3n! \u00a1Cu\u00e1ntos medios adoptan, cu\u00e1ntas medidas toman! Ni comen ni duermen. \u00bfY qu\u00e9 esfuerzos hacen para salvar sus almas? Todos se sonrojan cuando se les dice que descuidan sus asuntos familiares, \u00a1y cu\u00e1n pocos se averg\u00fcenzan de descuidar la salvaci\u00f3n de sus almas!\u00a0 Hermanos<\/em>, dice el San Pablo, le rogamos que se ocupe de sus propios asuntos;<\/em> es decir, el asunto de tu salvaci\u00f3n eterna.
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\"Las bagatelas de los ni\u00f1os\", dice San Bernardo, \"se llaman bagatelas<\/em>pero las nimiedades de los hombres se llaman empresa<\/em>y por estas peque\u00f1eces muchos pierden el alma. Si en una transacci\u00f3n mundana sufres una p\u00e9rdida, puedes repararla en otra; pero si mueres en enemistad con Dios, y pierdes tu alma, \u00bfc\u00f3mo puedes reparar esta p\u00e9rdida?\u00a0 \u00bfQu\u00e9 cambio dar\u00e1 un hombre por su alma?<\/em> - (Mt. xvi., 26). A los que descuidan el cuidado de la salvaci\u00f3n, dice San Eucario: \"Si no crees a tu Creador cu\u00e1n precioso eres, interroga a tu Redentor\". Si, por haber sido creado por Dios a Su propia imagen, no comprendes el valor de tu alma, apr\u00e9ndelo de Jesucristo, que te ha redimido con Su propia Sangre.\u00a0 No fuisteis rescatados con cosas corruptibles como oro o plata, . <\/em>. sino con la sangre preciosa de Cristo, como de un cordero sin mancha y sin contaminaci\u00f3n<\/em>. - (1 Pet. i., 18).
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Dios, por lo tanto, le da un alto valor a tu alma. Tal es su valor en la estimaci\u00f3n de Satan\u00e1s, que, para llegar a ser due\u00f1o de ella, no duerme ni de noche ni de d\u00eda, sino que est\u00e1 continuamente yendo de un lado a otro tratando de hacerla suya. De ah\u00ed que San Agust\u00edn exclame: \"El enemigo no duerme, \u00bfy t\u00fa duermes?\". El enemigo est\u00e1 siempre despierto para perjudicarte, y t\u00fa duermes. El Papa Benedicto XII, al serle pedido por un pr\u00edncipe un favor que no pod\u00eda concederle en conciencia, dijo al embajador: Dile al pr\u00edncipe que si tuviera dos almas, podr\u00eda perder una de ellas para complacerle; pero, como s\u00f3lo tengo una, no puedo consentir en perderla. As\u00ed rechaz\u00f3 el favor que le ped\u00eda el pr\u00edncipe.
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Oh Dios, \u00bfcu\u00e1l ser\u00e1 mi suerte? \u00bfMe salvar\u00e9 o me perder\u00e9? Puedo salvarme o perderme. Y si puedo perderme, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 no abrazo una vida que me asegure la vida eterna? Oh Jes\u00fas, T\u00fa moriste para salvarme; sin embargo, me he perdido tantas veces como te he perdido a Ti, mi soberano Bien. No permitas que te pierda m\u00e1s.<\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 Desde que Dios es Dios, nos ha amado. Desde que se am\u00f3 a s\u00ed mismo, nos ha amado a nosotros.\u00a0 Amemos, pues, a Dios, porque Dios nos am\u00f3 primero<\/em>. - (1 Jo. iv., 10).<\/p>

Meditaci\u00f3n I:
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Considera que Dios merece tu amor, porque te am\u00f3 antes de que t\u00fa le amaras, y porque ha sido el primero de todos en amarte. \u00a0Te he amado con amor eterno.<\/em> - (Jer. xxxi., 3). Tus padres han sido los primeros que te han amado en esta tierra; pero s\u00f3lo te han amado desde que te conocen. Antes de que tu padre o tu madre vinieran a este mundo, Dios te amaba: incluso antes de que el mundo fuera creado, \u00c9l te amaba. \u00bfY cu\u00e1nto tiempo antes de la creaci\u00f3n del mundo te amaba Dios? \u00bfQuiz\u00e1 mil a\u00f1os, o mil edades? Es in\u00fatil contar a\u00f1os o edades; Dios te ha amado desde la eternidad.\u00a0 Te he amado con amor eterno; por eso te he atra\u00eddo, compadeci\u00e9ndome de ti<\/em>. - (Jer. xxxi., 3). En una palabra, desde que es Dios, te ama. De ah\u00ed que la santa virgen, Santa In\u00e9s, tuviera motivos para decir: \"Me previene otro Amante\". Cuando el mundo y las criaturas buscaron su amor, ella respondi\u00f3: No, no puedo amaros. Mi Dios ha sido el primero en amarme; es justo, pues, que consagre todo mi amor s\u00f3lo a \u00c9l.
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0As\u00ed te ha amado Dios desde la eternidad, y por puro amor te ha tomado de entre tantos hombres que pod\u00eda crear; te ha dado la existencia, y te ha colocado en el mundo. Por amor a ti ha creado Dios tantas otras hermosas criaturas, para que te sirvan y te recuerden el amor que te ha tenido y el que t\u00fa le debes. \"El cielo y la tierra\", dice San Agust\u00edn, \"me dicen que te ame\". Cuando el Santo miraba al sol, a la luna, a las estrellas, a las monta\u00f1as, a los r\u00edos, se le aparec\u00edan para hablarle, y decirle: \"Agust\u00edn, ama a tu Dios; porque \u00c9l nos ha creado para ti, para que t\u00fa le ames\". El abad de Ranc\u00e9, fundador de La Trappe, cuando ve\u00eda una colina, una fuente o una flor, dec\u00eda que todas estas criaturas le reprend\u00edan por su ingratitud hacia Dios. Al sostener una flor o un fruto en la mano, Santa Mar\u00eda Magdalena de Pazzi sent\u00eda su coraz\u00f3n herido como por un dardo del amor divino, y dec\u00eda en su interior: \"Entonces, mi Dios ha pensado desde la eternidad en crear esta flor o fruto, para que yo pudiera amarle\".
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Oh soberano Se\u00f1or del cielo y de la tierra, infinito Bien, infinita Majestad, que has amado tan tiernamente a los hombres, \u00bfc\u00f3mo es que eres tan despreciado por ellos? Pero entre estos hombres, T\u00fa, oh Dios m\u00edo, me has amado de una manera particular, y me has concedido gracias especiales que no has dado a tantos otros. Y yo Te he despreciado m\u00e1s que los dem\u00e1s. Me postro a Tus pies, oh Jes\u00fas, mi Salvador, No me alejes de tu rostro<\/em> - (Sal. l., 13). Merecer\u00eda ser desechado a causa de mi ingratitud hacia Ti. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0El pecado maldito nos rob\u00f3 la gracia divina y nos hizo esclavos del infierno, pero, para asombro del Cielo y de toda la naturaleza, el Hijo de Dios vino a la tierra como Hombre para redimirnos de la muerte eterna y comprar para nosotros la gracia y la gloria eterna que hab\u00edamos perdido.\u00a0 Se despoj\u00f3 de s\u00ed mismo tomando forma de siervo. . . y en h\u00e1bito hallado como hombre<\/em>. - (Fil. ii., 7).<\/p>

Meditaci\u00f3n I:
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Dios nos ha dado muchas criaturas hermosas, ciertamente, pero no se content\u00f3 hasta darnos a \u00c9l mismo.\u00a0 Cristo nos am\u00f3 y se entreg\u00f3 por nosotros<\/em>. - (Ef., v., 2). El maldito pecado nos hab\u00eda robado la gracia divina y nos hab\u00eda convertido en esclavos del infierno; pero, para asombro del Cielo y de toda la naturaleza, el Hijo de Dios vino a la tierra como Hombre para redimirnos de la muerte eterna y comprar para nosotros la gracia y la gloria eterna que hab\u00edamos perdido. \u00a1Cu\u00e1n grande ser\u00eda nuestro asombro si vi\u00e9ramos a un monarca convertirse en gusano por amor a los gusanos! Pero nuestro asombro deber\u00eda ser infinitamente mayor al ver a Dios hecho Hombre por amor a los hombres.\u00a0 Se despoj\u00f3 de s\u00ed mismo tomando forma de siervo. . . y en h\u00e1bito hallado como hombre<\/em>. - (Fil. ii., 7). \u00a1Dios vestido de carne!\u00a0 Y el Verbo se hizo carne<\/em>. - (Jo. i., 14). Pero el asombro aumenta cuando vemos todo lo que el Hijo de Dios ha hecho y sufrido por amor a nosotros. Para redimirnos le hubiera bastado derramar una sola gota de su Sangre, o una sola l\u00e1grima, u ofrecer una sola oraci\u00f3n; porque una oraci\u00f3n ofrecida por una Persona Divina ser\u00eda de valor infinito, y por tanto suficiente para la salvaci\u00f3n del mundo entero, y de un n\u00famero o mundos infinitos. Pero, dice San Cris\u00f3stomo, lo que era suficiente para la redenci\u00f3n no era suficiente para el inmenso amor que Dios nos ten\u00eda. No s\u00f3lo quiso salvarnos, sino que, porque nos amaba ardientemente, quiso ser amado ardientemente por nosotros; y por eso resolvi\u00f3 llevar una vida llena de penas y humillaciones, y sufrir una muerte la m\u00e1s dolorosa de todas las muertes, para hacernos comprender el infinito amor que nos profesaba.\u00a0 Se humill\u00f3 a s\u00ed mismo, haci\u00e9ndose obediente hasta la muerte, y muerte de cruz.<\/em>. - (Fil. ii., 8). \u00a1Oh exceso de amor divino, que todos los hombres y los \u00e1ngeles jam\u00e1s podr\u00e1n comprender! Yo digo exceso<\/em>pues Mois\u00e9s y El\u00edas, hablando de la Pasi\u00f3n de Jesucristo, la llamaron un exceso<\/em>. - (Lucas ix., 31). San Buenaventura llam\u00f3 a la Pasi\u00f3n de Cristo, un \"exceso de dolor y de amor\".
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Oh Jes\u00fas m\u00edo, veo que no podr\u00edas haber hecho nada m\u00e1s para obligarme a amarte; y veo tambi\u00e9n que con mi ingratitud he trabajado para obligarte a abandonarme. Bendita sea por siempre Tu paciencia que me ha soportado tanto tiempo. Merezco un infierno hecho a prop\u00f3sito para m\u00ed; pero Tu muerte me da confianza. Hazme comprender bien las pretensiones que T\u00fa, oh Bien infinito, tienes a mi amor, y las obligaciones por las que estoy obligado a amarte. Yo sab\u00eda, oh Jes\u00fas m\u00edo, que T\u00fa moriste por m\u00ed; \u00bfc\u00f3mo entonces, oh Dios, he podido vivir tantos a\u00f1os en el olvido de Ti? \u00a1Oh, si volvieran a empezar los a\u00f1os pasados de mi vida! Quisiera, Se\u00f1or m\u00edo, d\u00e1rtelos todos. Pero los a\u00f1os no vuelven. Meditaci\u00f3n matutina: EL AMOR DE DIOS:\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/b>III. EL AMOR QUE NOS HA MANIFESTADO EN SU PASI\u00d3N<\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Tengo un bautismo con el que he de ser bautizado, <\/em>dijo Jes\u00fasy c\u00f3mo me aprieto hasta que se cumpla.<\/em> - (Lucas. xii., 50). Voy a ser bautizado con el Bautismo de Mi propia Sangre, y me siento morir por el deseo de que llegue pronto Mi Pasi\u00f3n y Muerte para que as\u00ed el hombre conozca el amor que le profeso. Ah, Jes\u00fas m\u00edo, los hombres no Te aman porque no piensan en el amor que T\u00fa les has tenido.<\/p>

Meditaci\u00f3n I:
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Nuestro asombro aumenta cada vez m\u00e1s cuando consideramos el ardor con que Jesucristo dese\u00f3 sufrir y morir por amor a nosotros.\u00a0 Tengo un bautismo, <\/em>dijo Jesucristo, con el que voy a ser bautizado<\/em>\u00a0y c\u00f3mo me aprieto hasta que se cumpla.<\/em> - (Lucas. xii., 50). He de ser bautizado con el Bautismo de Mi propia Sangre; y me siento morir por el deseo de que llegue pronto Mi Pasi\u00f3n y Muerte, para que as\u00ed conozca el hombre el amor que le profeso. Fue este deseo el que hizo decir a Jes\u00fas la noche antes de su Pasi\u00f3n: Con deseo he deseado comer esta pascua con vosotros antes de sufrir<\/em>. - (Lucas xxii., 15). Entonces, dice San Basilio de Seleucia, parece que nuestro Dios no puede saciarse de amar a los hombres.
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Ah, Jes\u00fas m\u00edo, los hombres no Te aman porque no piensan en el amor que T\u00fa les has tenido. Oh Dios! \u00bfC\u00f3mo es posible que un alma viva sin amar a Dios, si considera que \u00c9l muri\u00f3 por ella y muri\u00f3 con tan gran deseo de demostrarle Su amor?\u00a0 La caridad de Cristo nos apremia<\/em>. - (2 Cor. v., 14). San Pablo dice que no es tanto lo que Jesucristo ha hecho y padecido por nuestra salvaci\u00f3n, cuanto el amor que mostr\u00f3 al sufrir por nosotros, lo que nos obliga y, por decirlo as\u00ed, nos fuerza a amarle. Contemplando el amor que Jesucristo muestra en su Pasi\u00f3n, San Lorenzo Justiniano exclam\u00f3: Hemos visto a la Sabidur\u00eda misma como insensata, por el exceso de amor hacia nosotros. \u00bfY qui\u00e9n podr\u00eda creer, si la Fe no nos lo hubiera asegurado, que el Creador muriera por sus propias criaturas? En un \u00e9xtasis, Santa Mar\u00eda Magdalena de Pazzi, sosteniendo un Crucifijo en sus manos, exclam\u00f3: \"S\u00ed, Jes\u00fas m\u00edo, T\u00fa eres insensato por amor\". Esto dec\u00edan tambi\u00e9n los gentiles cuando o\u00edan a los Ap\u00f3stoles predicar la muerte de Jesucristo. Lo consideraban una locura que no se pod\u00eda creer.\u00a0 Nosotros predicamos a Cristo crucificado, para los jud\u00edos ciertamente esc\u00e1ndalo, y para los gentiles locura.<\/em>. - (1 Cor. i., 23). \u00bfY c\u00f3mo, dec\u00edan, podr\u00eda un Dios que es muy feliz en S\u00ed mismo, y no tiene necesidad de nadie, descender a la tierra para hacerse Hombre y morir por amor de los hombres que son Sus criaturas? Esto ser\u00eda lo mismo que creer que un Dios se hubiera hecho tonto por amor de los hombres. Pero es de Fe que Jesucristo el verdadero Hijo de Dios, se entreg\u00f3 a la muerte por amor a nosotros.\u00a0 Cristo nos am\u00f3 y se entreg\u00f3 por nosotros<\/em>. - (Ef. v., 2).
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Ah, mi querido Redentor, es verdad que no te he amado, porque no he reflexionado sobre el amor que T\u00fa me has tenido. Ah, Jes\u00fas m\u00edo, he sido muy ingrato contigo. T\u00fa has dado tu vida por m\u00ed, someti\u00e9ndote a la m\u00e1s dolorosa de todas las muertes, \u00bfy yo he sido tan ingrato que ni siquiera he pensado en tus sufrimientos? \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0El alma no puede existir sin amar al Creador o a las criaturas. Dada un alma despojada de todo otro amor, la encontrar\u00e9is llena de amor divino. \u00bfQueremos saber si nos hemos entregado enteramente a Dios? Examinemos si estamos despojados de todo o no.<\/p>

<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0El amor es fuerte como la muerte<\/em>. - (Cant. viii., 6). Como la muerte nos separa de todos los bienes del mundo, de las riquezas, de los honores, de la parentela, de los amigos y de todos los placeres terrenales, as\u00ed el amor de Dios, cuando reina en un coraz\u00f3n, lo despoja de todo afecto a estas ventajas perecederas. Por eso los santos se despojaron de todo lo que el mundo les ofrec\u00eda, renunciaron a sus posesiones, a sus puestos de honor y a todo lo que ten\u00edan, y huyeron a desiertos o claustros, para pensar y amar s\u00f3lo a Dios.
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00bfQueremos saber si nos hemos entregado enteramente a Dios? Examin\u00e9monos a nosotros mismos si estamos destetados de toda cosa terrenal o no.
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Algunas personas se lamentan de que en sus devociones, oraciones, Comuniones, Visitas al Sant\u00edsimo Sacramento, no encuentran a Dios. A los tales dice Santa Teresa: \"Desprende tu coraz\u00f3n de las criaturas, y luego busca a Dios, y le hallar\u00e1s\". No hallar\u00e1s, en efecto, constante dulzura espiritual, porque \u00e9sta no la da Dios sin interrupci\u00f3n ni aun a los que le aman en esta vida, sino que la concede s\u00f3lo de tiempo en tiempo para hacerlos volar hacia aquellas delicias sin l\u00edmites que les prepara en el Para\u00edso. Les da, sin embargo, una paz interior que supera todos los deleites sensuales; esa paz de Dios que sobrepasa todo entendimiento. Y qu\u00e9 mayor delicia puede gozar un alma que ama a Dios que poder decir con verdadero afecto: \"\u00a1Mi Dios y mi Todo!\". San Francisco de As\u00eds estuvo toda una noche en \u00e9xtasis de Para\u00edso repitiendo continuamente estas palabras: \"\u00a1Dios m\u00edo y mi Todo! Dios m\u00edo y mi Todo!\"

Como los amantes de Dios son odiosos al mundo, as\u00ed el mundo debe ser odioso al que ama a Dios. Jesucristo desea que nos volvamos superiores a las promesas y amenazas del mundo y que no tengamos m\u00e1s en cuenta sus censuras ni sus alabanzas.<\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Los mundanos temen perder sus bienes terrenales, por fugaces y miserables que sean, pero los santos s\u00f3lo temen perder a Dios, que es un Bien infinito y eterno. Por eso la muerte es objeto de terror para las almas apegadas a la tierra, mientras que es especialmente deseada por los que aman a Dios; porque, dice San Bernardo, es la terminaci\u00f3n del trabajo y la puerta de la vida. Gritan con San Pablo: \u00bfQui\u00e9n me librar\u00e1 del cuerpo de esta muerte?<\/em> - (Rom. vii., 24).<\/p>

<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Mientras estamos en el cuerpo estamos ausentes del Se\u00f1or<\/em>. - (2 Cor. v., 6). Las almas que en esta vida aman s\u00f3lo a Dios son como nobles peregrinos, destinados, seg\u00fan su estado actual, a ser las eternas esposas del Rey del Cielo, pero que ahora viven lejos sin verle; por lo cual no hacen m\u00e1s que suspirar por su partida al pa\u00eds de los bienaventurados, donde saben que les espera su Esposo.
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Saben, en efecto, que su Amado est\u00e1 siempre presente con ellos, pero est\u00e1, por as\u00ed decirlo, oculto por un velo, y no se muestra. O, para hablar con m\u00e1s propiedad, \u00c9l es como el sol detr\u00e1s de las nubes, que de vez en cuando, env\u00eda un rayo de su esplendor, pero no se muestra plenamente. Estas amadas novias tienen un velo ante sus ojos, que les impide ver a Aquel a quien aman. Viven, sin embargo, contentas, uni\u00e9ndose a la Voluntad del Se\u00f1or que elige mantenerlas en el exilio, y lejos de \u00c9l; pero con todo esto, no pueden sino suspirar continuamente por verle cara a cara, para inflamarse m\u00e1s de amor hacia \u00c9l.

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We can never know our friends and relatives in the days of prosperity: it is only in the time of adversity that we see them in their true colours. \u00a0People of the world never abandon a person in prosperity; but should misfortune overtake him, and particularly if death be at hand, they immediately forsake him. \u00a0The Blessed Virgin does not act thus with her clients. \u00a0In all their afflictions, and more particularly in the sorrows of death, the greatest that can be endured in this world, this good Lady and Mother not only does not abandon her faithful servants, but as during our exile on earth she is our life, <\/em>so at our last hour she is our sweetness,<\/em> by obtaining for us a peaceful, happy death. \u00a0For from the day on which Mary had the privilege and the sorrow of assisting at the death of Jesus her Son Who was the Head of all the predestined, it has become her privilege to assist also at their deaths. \u00a0And for this reason the Holy Church teaches us to beg this most Blessed Virgin to assist us especially at the moment of our death. \u00a0Pray for<\/em> us<\/em> sinners now and at the hour of our death.
<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 O how great are the sufferings of the dying! \u00a0They suffer from remorse of conscience on account of past sins; from the fear of the approaching Judgment and from the uncertainty of salvation. \u00a0Then it is that hell arms itself and spares no effort to gain the soul on the point of entering into eternity, for the devils know that only a short time remains in which to gain it, and that if they lose it then they lose it for ever. \u00a0The devil is come down unto you having great wrath knowing that he hath but a short time. \u2014 <\/em>(Apoc. xii., 12).
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh, how quickly do the rebellious spirits fly from the presence of this great Queen! \u00a0At the hour of death if only we have the protection of Mary what need we fear from all our infernal enemies? \u00a0O you are indeed fortunate if at death you are bound in the sweet chains of the love of the Mother of God! \u00a0These chains are chains of salvation.
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 O my most sweet Mother, how shall I die, poor sinner that I am? \u00a0Even now the thought of that supreme moment in which I must expire and appear before the Judgment seat of God, and the remembrance of having myself so often written my condemnation by consenting to sin, makes me tremble. \u00a0I am confounded and fear much for my salvation. \u00a0O Mary, in the Blood of Jesus and in thy intercession is all my hope.<\/p>

<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A great lover of Mary said before expiring: \u201cO my Father, would that you could know the happiness I now enjoy from having served the most holy Mother of God!\u00a0 I cannot tell you the joy I now experience!\u201d \u00a0Father Suarez in consequence of his devotion to Mary died with such peace and joy that he said: \u201cI could not have thought that death was so sweet!\u201d \u00a0You will, without doubt, experience the same joy and contentment in death if you can then remember that you have loved this good Mother who cannot be otherwise than faithful to her children who were faithful in serving and honouring her by their Visits, Rosaries, Fasts, and still more by frequently thanking and praising her and often recommending themselves to her powerful protection.
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nor will this consolation be withheld even if you have been for a time a sinner, provided that from this day you are careful to live well and to serve this most gracious and benign Lady. \u00a0Though you may have hitherto offended God she will procure you a sweet and happy death. \u00a0And if at that moment you are greatly alarmed and lose confidence at the sight of your sins, she will come and encourage you as she has so many others.\u00a0 Let us, then, be of good heart though we be sinners; and let us feel assured that Mary will come and assist us at death, and by her presence comfort and console us, provided only that we serve her lovingly during the remainder of our life. \u00a0Our Queen, addressing St. Matilda one day, promised to assist all her clients at death who, during life, had faithfully served her. \u00a0\u201cI, a most tender Mother,\u201d said Mary, \u201cwill faithfully be present at the death of all who piously serve me and will console and protect them.\u201d \u00a0O God, what a consolation will it be at that last moment of our lives, when our eternal lot has to be decided, to see the Queen of Heaven assisting and consoling us with the assurance of her protection!
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 O Consoler of the afflicted, console a poor creature who recommends himself to thee! \u00a0The remorse of a burdened conscience fills me with affliction. \u00a0I know not if I have sufficiently grieved for my sins. \u00a0All my actions are imperfect and sullied. \u00a0Hell awaits my death in order to accuse me: the outraged justice of God demands satisfaction. \u00a0My Mother, what will become of me? \u00a0If thou dost not help me I am lost. \u00a0Wilt thou not succour me?\u00a0 O compassionate Virgin, console me! \u00a0Obtain me true sorrow for my sins, and the strength to amend my life and be faithful to God during the rest of my days. \u00a0When I am in the last agonies of death, O Mary, my hope, do not abandon me. \u00a0Then, more than ever, help and encourage me that I may not despair at the sight of my sins which the devil will then place before my eyes. \u00a0O my Queen, pardon my temerity and come thyself to console me by thy presence. \u00a0Thou hast conferred this grace upon so many others, do not refuse it to me. \u00a0If my boldness is great, greater still is thy goodness, for it seeks out the most miserable in order to console them.\u00a0 It is this that gives me confidence. \u00a0For thy eternal glory, be it said that thou hast snatched an unhappy creature from hell to which he was already condemned and hast led him into thy kingdom. \u00a0O yes, sweet Mother, I hope to have the happiness of remaining always at thy feet in Heaven, thanking and blessing and loving thee for ever! \u00a0O Mary, I shall expect thee at my last hour. \u00a0Deprive me not of this consolation. \u00a0So may it be! \u00a0Amen.
