Juan xvi.)<\/p><p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0No hay nada m\u00e1s corto que el tiempo y, sin embargo, nada m\u00e1s valioso.  No hay nada m\u00e1s corto, porque el pasado ya no existe, el futuro es incierto, el presente es s\u00f3lo un instante.  Jesucristo dijo: <em>Un poco de tiempo y ya no me ver\u00e1s<\/em>.  Lo mismo podemos decir de nuestra vida que, seg\u00fan Santiago, es una <em>vapor que aparece durante un rato<\/em>. \u2014 (James iv. 15).<\/p><p><b>Meditaci\u00f3n I:<br \/><\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0El tiempo es corto, dice el Ap\u00f3stol San Pablo, <em>queda que... los que lloran sean como si no lloraran; que los que se alegran, como si no se alegraran; y los que compran, como si no poseyeran; y los que usan este mundo, como si no lo usaran<\/em>. \u2014 (1 Cor. vii. 29, 31).\u00a0 Since, then, the time we have to remain on this earth is short, the Apostle tells those who weep that they ought not to weep, because their sorrows shall soon pass away; and those who rejoice, not to fix their affections on enjoyments, because they shall soon have an end.\u00a0 Hence he concludes that we should use this world, not to enjoy its transitory goods, but to merit eternal life.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<em>Hijo<\/em>dice el Esp\u00edritu Santo, <em>observar la hora<\/em>. \u2014 (Ecclus. iv. 23).\u00a0 Son, learn to preserve time, which is the most precious and the greatest gift that God can bestow upon you.\u00a0 St. Bernardine of Sienna teaches that time is of as much value as God; because in every moment of time well spent the possession of God is merited.\u00a0 He adds that in every instant of this life a man may obtain pardon of his sins, the grace of God, and the glory of Paradise.\u00a0 Hence St. Bonaventure says that &#8220;no loss is of greater moment than the loss of time.&#8221;<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Pero, por su parte, San Bernardo dice que aunque no hay nada m\u00e1s precioso que el tiempo, no hay nada menos valioso en la estimaci\u00f3n de los hombres.  Ver\u00e1s que algunas personas pasan cuatro o cinco horas jugando.  Si les preguntas por qu\u00e9 pierden tanto tiempo, responden: Para divertirse.  Otros se pasan medio d\u00eda de pie en la calle o mirando por la ventana.  Si se les pregunta qu\u00e9 hacen, responden que pasan el tiempo.  \u00bfY por qu\u00e9, dice el mismo Santo, pierdes ese tiempo?  \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 hab\u00e9is de perder una sola hora que la misericordia de Dios os concede para llorar vuestros pecados y adquirir la gracia divina?<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Oh tiempo, despreciado por los hombres durante la vida, \u00a1cu\u00e1nto ser\u00e1s deseado a la hora de la muerte, y particularmente en el otro mundo!  El tiempo es una bendici\u00f3n de la que s\u00f3lo gozamos en esta vida; no se disfruta en la otra; no se encuentra ni en el Cielo ni en el infierno.  En el infierno los condenados exclaman con l\u00e1grimas: \"\u00a1Oh, si se nos concediera una hora!\"  Pagar\u00edan cualquier precio por una hora o por un minuto en que pudieran reparar su ruina eterna.  Pero esta hora o este minuto nunca los tendr\u00e1n.  En el cielo no hay llanto; pero, si los santos fueran capaces de afligirse, todos sus lamentos surgir\u00edan del pensamiento de haber perdido en esta vida el tiempo en el que podr\u00edan haber adquirido mayor gloria, y de la convicci\u00f3n de que este tiempo nunca m\u00e1s les ser\u00e1 concedido.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Oh Dios de mi alma, \u00a1cu\u00e1l ser\u00eda mi suerte en este momento si T\u00fa no me hubieras mostrado tantas misericordias!  Estar\u00eda en el infierno entre los necios a cuyo n\u00famero he pertenecido.  Te doy gracias, Se\u00f1or m\u00edo, y te suplico que no me abandones en mi ceguera.  Siento que me llamas tiernamente a pedirte perd\u00f3n y a esperar de Ti las gracias.  S\u00ed, Salvador m\u00edo, espero que me admitas entre tus hijos.  Padre, no soy digno de ser llamado hijo tuyo.  He pecado contra el Cielo y ante Ti.<\/p><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n II:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 St. Francis Borgia was careful to employ every moment of his time for God. \u00a0When others spoke of useless things, he conversed with God by holy affections; and so recollected was he that, when asked his opinion on the subject of conversation he knew not what answer to make.\u00a0 Being corrected for this, he said: I am content to be considered stupid rather than lose my time in vanities.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some will say: What evil am I doing? \u00a0Is it not, I ask, an evil to spend your time in amusements, in conversations, and useless occupations which are unprofitable to the soul? \u00a0Does God give you this time to waste it?\u00a0 <em>Let not,<\/em> says the Holy Ghost, <em>the part of a good gift overpass thee. \u2014 <\/em>(Ecclus. xiv. 14). \u00a0The labourers of whom St. Matthew speaks did no evil; they only lost time, remaining idle in the streets. \u00a0But they were rebuked: <em>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 est\u00e1s aqu\u00ed todo el d\u00eda sin hacer nada? <\/em>\u2014 (Matth. xx. 6).\u00a0 On the day of Judgment Jesus Christ will demand an account, not only of every month and day that has been lost, but even of every idle word spoken. \u00a0<em>Every idle word that men shall speak they shall render an account for it in the day of judgment. <\/em>\u2014 (Matth. xii. 36). \u00a0He will likewise demand an account of every moment of the time which you will lose. \u00a0According to St. Bernard, all time not spent for God is time lost. \u00a0Hence the Holy Ghost says: <em>Whatsoever thy hand is able to do, do it earnestly; for neither work nor reason . . . shall be in hell, whither thou art hastening.<\/em> \u00a0What you can do to-day defer not till to-morrow; for on to-morrow you may be dead, and may be gone into another world where you shall have no more time to do good, and where you shall only enjoy the reward of your virtues or suffer the punishment due to your sins. \u00a0<em>To-day if you shall hear his voice harden not your hearts. \u2014 <\/em>(Ps. xciv.). \u00a0Obey His call to-day; for it may happen that on to-morrow time will be no more for you, or that God will call you no more. \u00a0All our salvation depends on corresponding with the Divine calls, and at the time that God calls us.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 O my God, enlighten me! \u00a0Give me to understand that the only evil is to offend Thee, the only good to love Thee. \u00a0Enable me to spend the remainder of my days in serving Thee. \u00a0O Mary, my hope, do thou intercede for me.<\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Lectura espiritual:\u00a0\u00a0<i>\u00a1SALVE REGINA, MATER MISERICORDIAE!  \u00a1SALVE, SANTA REINA, MADRE DE MISERICORDIA!<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">XIII.  MAR\u00cdA ES LA MADRE DE LOS PECADORES PENITENTES<\/p><p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0La Sant\u00edsima Virgen dijo a Santa Br\u00edgida que era Madre no s\u00f3lo de los justos e inocentes, sino tambi\u00e9n de los pecadores, siempre que estuvieran dispuestos a arrepentirse.  \u00a1Oh, qu\u00e9 pronto encuentra el pecador deseoso de enmienda que vuela a sus pies a esta buena Madre para abrazarle y ayudarle, mucho m\u00e1s que cualquier madre terrena!  San Gregorio VII escribi\u00f3 en este sentido a la princesa Matilde, diciendo: \"Resu\u00e9lvete a no pecar m\u00e1s y te prometo que indudablemente encontrar\u00e1s a Mar\u00eda m\u00e1s dispuesta a amarte que cualquier madre terrena\".<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Pero quien aspire a ser hijo de esta gran Madre debe primero abandonar el pecado, y entonces podr\u00e1 esperar ser aceptado como tal.  Ricardo de San Lorenzo, sobre las palabras de Proverbios, <em>se levantaron sus hijos<\/em> \u2014 (Prov. xxxi. 28), remarks that the words <em>arriba rosa<\/em> vino primero, y luego la palabra <em>ni\u00f1os<\/em> para mostrar que nadie puede ser hijo de Mar\u00eda sin antes esforzarse por levantarse de la falta en que ha ca\u00eddo; pues quien est\u00e1 en pecado mortal no es digno de llamarse hijo de tal Madre.  Y San Pedro Cris\u00f3logo dice que quien act\u00faa de manera diferente a Mar\u00eda declara con ello que no ser\u00e1 su hijo.  \"Quien no hace las obras de su Madre abjura de su linaje\".  Mar\u00eda humilde y \u00e9l orgulloso; Mar\u00eda pura y \u00e9l malvado; Mar\u00eda llena de caridad y \u00e9l odiando a su pr\u00f3jimo.  Los hijos de Mar\u00eda, dice Ricardo de San Lorenzo, son sus imitadores, y esto principalmente en tres cosas: en castidad, liberalidad y humildad; y tambi\u00e9n en mansedumbre, misericordia y cosas semejantes.\u00a0 <br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Mientras la repugna con una vida perversa, \u00bfqui\u00e9n se atrever\u00eda siquiera a desear ser hijo de Mar\u00eda?  Cierto pecador dijo una vez a Mar\u00eda: \"Mu\u00e9strate Madre\"; pero la Sant\u00edsima Virgen respondi\u00f3: \"Mu\u00e9strate hijo\".  Otro invoc\u00f3 a la Divina Madre, llam\u00e1ndola \"Madre de misericordia\"; y ella respondi\u00f3: \"Vosotros pecadores, cuando quer\u00e9is mi ayuda, llamadme \"Madre de misericordia\", y al mismo tiempo no dej\u00e9is por vuestros pecados de hacerme \"Madre de dolor y de angustia\".\"\u00a0 <em>Est\u00e1 maldito de Dios<\/em>dice el Eclesi\u00e1stico, <em>que enoja a su madre<\/em>. \u2014 (Ecclus. iii. 18).\u00a0 &#8220;<em>Su madre<\/em>Esa es Mar\u00eda\", dice Ricardo de San Lorenzo.  Dios maldice a los que con su vida perversa, y m\u00e1s a\u00fan con su obstinaci\u00f3n en el pecado, afligen a esta tierna Madre.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Digo por su obstinaci\u00f3n; porque si un pecador, aunque todav\u00eda no haya renunciado a su pecado, se esfuerza en hacerlo, y para ello busca la ayuda de Mar\u00eda, esta buena Madre no dejar\u00e1 de asistirle, y de hacerle recobrar la gracia de Dios.  Y esto es precisamente lo que Santa Br\u00edgida oy\u00f3 un d\u00eda de labios de Jesucristo, quien, hablando a su Madre, dijo: \"T\u00fa asistes a quien se esfuerza por volver a Dios, y a nadie faltan tus consuelos\".  As\u00ed pues, mientras un pecador se obstine, Mar\u00eda no puede amarle; pero si \u00e9l, encontr\u00e1ndose encadenado por alguna pasi\u00f3n que le mantiene esclavo del infierno, se encomienda a la Sant\u00edsima Virgen, y le implora, con confianza y perseverancia, que le saque del estado de pecado en que se encuentra, no puede dudarse de que esta buena Madre le tender\u00e1 su poderosa mano, le librar\u00e1 de sus cadenas y le conducir\u00e1 a un estado de salvaci\u00f3n.<\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n vespertina:\u00a0\u00a0<i>LA PR\u00c1CTICA DEL AMOR DE JESUCRISTO\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">XIX.  CU\u00c1NTO ESTAMOS OBLIGADOS A AMAR A JESUCRISTO<\/p><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n I:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Nuestro Se\u00f1or dijo un d\u00eda a Santa Teresa: \"Todo lo que no me complace es vanidad\".  \u00a1Ojal\u00e1 todos comprendieran bien esta gran verdad!  \"Por lo dem\u00e1s, una cosa es necesaria\".  No es necesario ser rico en este mundo, ganar la estimaci\u00f3n de los dem\u00e1s, llevar una vida desahogada, gozar de dignidades, tener fama de erudito: s\u00f3lo es necesario amar a Dios y hacer su voluntad.  Para este \u00fanico fin nos ha creado, para esto conserva nuestra vida; y s\u00f3lo as\u00ed podemos conseguir la entrada en el Para\u00edso.\u00a0 <em>Ponme como un sello en tu coraz\u00f3n, como un sello en tu brazo<\/em>. \u2014 (Cant. viii. 6).\u00a0 The Lord thus speaks to all His espoused souls.\u00a0 Put Me as a seal upon Thy heart and upon thine arm, in order that all thy desires and actions may tend to Me; upon thy heart, that no other love but Mine may enter there; upon thine arm, in order that all thou dost may have Me for its sole object.\u00a0 Oh, how quickly does that soul speed onwards to perfection which in all her actions regards but Jesus crucified, and has no other desire than to gratify Him!<\/p><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n II:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To acquire, then, a true love of Jesus Christ should be our only care. \u00a0The masters of the spiritual life describe the marks of true love. \u00a0Love, say they, is <em>fearful,<\/em> and its fear is none other than that of displeasing God. \u00a0It is <em>generous,<\/em> because, trusting in God, it is never daunted even at the greatest enterprises for His glory.\u00a0 It is <em>strong,<\/em> because it subdues all its evil appetites, even in the midst of the most violent temptations, and of the darkest desolations. \u00a0It is <em>obedient,<\/em> because it immediately flies to execute the Divine will. \u00a0It is <em>pure, <\/em>because it loves God alone, and for the sole reason that He deserves to be loved. \u00a0It is <em>ardent,<\/em> because it would inflame all mankind, and willingly see them consumed with Divine love. \u00a0It is <em>inebriating,<\/em> for it causes the soul to live as it were out of herself, as if she no longer saw, nor felt, nor had any more perception of earthly things, bent wholly on loving God. \u00a0It is <em>unitive<\/em> by producing a close union between the will of the creature and the Will of the Creator. \u00a0It is <em>longing,<\/em> for it fills the soul with desires of leaving this world, to fly and unite herself perfectly with God in her true and happy country, where she may love Him with all her strength.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-8763\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-8763\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">LUNES DE LA TERCERA SEMANA DESPU\u00c9S DE PASCUA<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-8763\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-8763\"><p><b>Meditaci\u00f3n matutina:\u00a0<em> \"HA LLAMADO CONTRA M\u00cd EL TIEMPO\"<\/em><\/b><\/p><p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Alguien dir\u00e1, tal vez: \"Soy joven.  M\u00e1s tarde me entregar\u00e9 a Dios\".  \"\u00bfC\u00f3mo puedes prometerte otro d\u00eda\", dice San Agust\u00edn, \"cuando no sabes si vivir\u00e1s una hora m\u00e1s?\".  \"Si\", dice Santa Teresa, \"no est\u00e1s preparado para morir hoy, tiembla para no tener una muerte infeliz\".<\/p><p><b>Meditaci\u00f3n I:<br \/><\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 Alguien dir\u00e1, tal vez: Soy joven.  M\u00e1s tarde me entregar\u00e9 a Dios.  Pero recordad que el Evangelio nos dice que Jesucristo maldijo la higuera que encontr\u00f3 sin fruto, aunque todav\u00eda no hab\u00eda llegado la \u00e9poca de los higos.\u00a0 <em>No era tiempo de higos<\/em>. \u2014 (Mark xi. 13).\u00a0 By this the Saviour wished to signify that man at all times, even in youth, should produce fruits of good works; and that otherwise, like the fig-tree, he shall be cursed, and shall produce no fruit for the future.\u00a0 <em>Que nadie vuelva a comer de ti para siempre.<\/em>. \u2014 (Mark xi. 14).\u00a0 <em>No tardes en convertirte al Se\u00f1or, y no lo aplaces de d\u00eda en d\u00eda; porque su ira vendr\u00e1 de repente.<\/em>. \u2014 (Ecclus. v. 8).\u00a0 If you find your soul in the state of sin, delay not your repentance nor your Confession.\u00a0 Do not put them off even till tomorrow; for, if you do not obey the voice of God calling you to-day to confess your sins, death may this day overtake you in sin, and to-morrow there may be no hope of salvation for you.\u00a0 The devil regards the whole of our life as very short, and therefore he loses not a moment of time, but tempts us day and night.\u00a0 <em>El diablo ha descendido a vosotros con gran ira, sabiendo que tiene poco tiempo<\/em>. \u2014 (Apoc. xii. 12).\u00a0 The enemy, then, never loses time in seeking to bring us to hell: and shall we squander the time God has given us to save our souls?<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 T\u00fa dices: \"En adelante me entregar\u00e9 a Dios\".  Pero \"\u00bfpor qu\u00e9\", responde San Bernardo, \"presumes, oh miserable, del futuro, como si el Padre pusiera el tiempo en tu poder?\".  \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 presumes que en adelante te entregar\u00e1s a Dios, como si \u00c9l te hubiera dado el tiempo y la oportunidad de volver a \u00c9l cuando quieras? Tenemos poco tiempo para permanecer en este mundo; pero en este corto tiempo tenemos muchos trabajos que sufrir: <em>El hombre nacido de una mujer, que vive poco tiempo, est\u00e1 lleno de muchas miserias<\/em>. \u2014 (Job xiv. 1).\u00a0 We must suffer, and all must suffer: be they just or be they sinners, each one must carry his cross.\u00a0 He that carries it with patience is saved; he that carries it with impatience is lost.\u00a0 St. Augustine says the same miseries send some to Paradise and some to hell: &#8220;One and the same blow lifts the good to glory and reduces the bad to ashes.&#8221;\u00a0 The same Saint observes that by the test of suffering the chaff in the Church of God is distinguished from the wheat: he that humbles himself under tribulations, and is resigned to the will of God, is wheat for Paradise; he that grows haughty and is enraged, and so forsakes God, is chaff for hell.<\/p><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n II:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 On the day when the cause of our salvation shall be decided, our life must be found conformable to the life of Jesus Christ, if we would enjoy the happy sentence of the predestined: <em>For whom he foreknew he also predestinated to be made conformable to the image of his Son. <\/em>\u2014 (Rom. viii. 29). \u00a0This was the end for which the Eternal Word descended upon earth, to teach us, by His example, to carry with patience the cross which God sends us: <em>Christ suffered for us,<\/em> wrote St. Peter, <em>leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps. \u2014 <\/em>(1 Pet. ii. 21). \u00a0So that Jesus Christ suffered on purpose to encourage us to suffer. \u00a0O God! \u00a0St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi assisted and served the sick, and desired to live in some hospital in order to be always employed in an office so pleasing to God. \u00a0\u201cIf you wish to know,\u201d Father Anthony Torres used to say, \u201cwhether the Spirit of God reigns in a community, ask how the sick are treated.\u201d \u00a0All who tend to perfection practise charity towards the sick. \u00a0Be careful, then, to relieve the sick by alms, or by little presents, and to serve them as well as you can, at least by endeavouring to console them by your words, by exhortations to practise resignation to God\u2019s will, and to offer Him all their sufferings. \u00a0Do not look for thanks; but bear with their complaints, impatience, and rudeness.\u00a0 The Lord Himself will reward your charity. \u00a0It is related in the <em>Chronicles of the Teresians<\/em> that Sr. Isabella of the Angels was seen ascending to Heaven immediately after death and carried by Angels amid great splendour. \u00a0She said to a Religious to whom she appeared afterwards that God had bestowed that glory on her for her charity towards the sick.<\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Lectura espiritual:\u00a0\u00a0<i>\u00a1SALVE REGINA, MATER MISERICORDIAE! (Ecclus. xvii. 12).<\/p><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n II:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 St. Philip Neri says that, when necessary, God wishes that we omit mental prayer in order to assist a neighbour, particularly in his spiritual necessities. \u00a0St. Gertrude desired one day to entertain herself in prayer, but a work of charity was to be performed, and therefore the Lord said to her: \u201cTell me, Gertrude, do you intend that I should serve you, or that you should serve Me?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cIf,\u201d says St. Gregory, \u201cyou go to God, take care not to go alone to Him.\u201d \u00a0And Saint Augustine says: \u201cIf you love God, draw all to the love of God.\u201d \u00a0If you love God you should take care not to be alone in loving Him, but should labour to bring to His love all your relatives, and all those with whom you have intercourse.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To appear devout, mortified, devoted to mental prayer and to frequent Communion, in order to give good example to others, in order to induce others to do likewise, is not an act of vanity, but an act of charity, very pleasing to God. \u00a0<em>So let your light shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. \u2014 <\/em>(Matt. v. 16).<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Endeavour, then, to assist all according to the best of your ability, by words, works, and particularly by prayers. \u00a0Many Doctors, along with St. Basil, teach, that by the words <em>Amen I say to you, if you ask the Father anything in my name, he will give it you <\/em>\u2014 (John xvi. 23), Jesus Christ promises to hear our prayers, not only for ourselves, but also for others, provided they do not place a positive obstacle in the way. \u00a0Hence, in the common prayer, in your Thanksgiving after Communion, and your Visits to the Blessed Sacrament, you should never omit to recommend to God all poor sinners, infidels, and heretics, and all that live without God.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How pleasing to Jesus Christ are the prayers of His spouses for sinners! \u00a0He once said to the Venerable Sister Seraphina de Capri: \u201cAssist Me, O My daughter, to save souls by your prayers.\u201d \u00a0To Mary Magdalen de Pazzi He said: \u201cSee, Magdalen, how Christians are in the hands of the devil; unless my elect by their prayers deliver them, they will be devoured.\u201d \u00a0Hence the Saint used to say to her Religious: \u201cMy sisters, God has not separated us from the world only for our own good, but also for the benefit of sinners.\u201d \u00a0And on another occasion she said: \u201cMy sisters, we have to render to God an account for so many lost souls: had we recommended them to God with fervour, perhaps they would not be damned.\u201d \u00a0Hence we read in her life that she did not allow an hour of the day to pass without praying for sinners. \u00a0Oh, how many souls are sometimes converted, not so much by the sermons of priests as by the prayers of Religious! \u00a0It was once revealed to a preacher that the fruit which he produced was not the effect of his sermons, but of the prayers of a lay-brother who assisted him at the pulpit. \u00a0Be careful, also, to pray for priests, that they may labour with true zeal for the salvation of souls.<\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Lectura espiritual:\u00a0\u00a0<i>\u00a1VITA, DULCEDO!  \u00a1SALVE, VIDA NUESTRA, DULZURA NUESTRA!<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">XVII. Te amo, oh Jes\u00fas querido; Te amo y conf\u00edo en Ti.<\/p><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n II:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The glorious St. Bernard one day in sickness saw himself before the Judgment-seat of God, where the devil was accusing him of his sins, and telling him that he did not deserve Paradise: \u201cIt is true that I deserve not Paradise,\u201d the Saint replied, \u201cbut Jesus has a twofold title to this kingdom \u2013 in the first place, as being by nature Son of God; in the next place, as having purchased it by His Death. \u00a0He contents Himself with the first of these, and the second He makes over to me; and therefore it is that I ask and hope for Paradise.\u201d \u00a0We, too, can say the same; for St. Paul tells us that the will of Jesus Christ to die, consumed by sufferings, had for its end the obtaining of Paradise for all sinners that are penitent and resolved to amend. \u00a0And hence the Apostle subjoins: <em>Let us run . . . to the fight proposed unto us, looking on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of faith, who, having joy set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame. \u2014 <\/em>(Heb. xii. 1, 2). \u00a0Let us go forth with courage to fight against our enemies, fixing our eyes on Jesus Christ, Who, together with the merits of His Passion, offers us the victory and the crown.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He has told us that He is gone to Heaven to prepare a place for us: <em>Let not your heart be troubled<\/em> . . . <em>I go<\/em> <em>to prepare a place for you. <\/em>\u2014 (John xiv. 1, 2). \u00a0He has told, and is continually telling His Father that since He has consigned us to Him, He wishes us to be with Him in Paradise: <em>Father, those whom thou hast given me, I will that where I am they also may be with me. \u2014 <\/em>(John xvii. 24). \u00a0And what greater mercy could we have hoped for from the Lord, says St. Anselm, than for the Eternal Father to have said to a sinner, already for crimes condemned to hell, and with no means of delivering himself from its punishments: Take thou My Son, and offer Him in thy place? \u00a0And for the same Son to have said: Take Me, and deliver thyself from hell? \u00a0\u201cWhat greater mercy can we imagine than that to one who, being a sinner, cannot redeem himself, God the Father should say: Accept of My only-begotten Son, and deliver Him over to be punished in thy stead; and that the Son should say: Take Me, and redeem thyself?\u201d<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ah, my loving Father, I thank Thee for having given me this Thy Son for my Saviour; I offer to Thee His death; and, for the sake of His merits, I pray Thee for mercy. \u00a0And ever do I return thanks to Thee, my Redeemer, for having given Thy Blood and Thy Life to deliver me from eternal death. \u00a0\u201cWe pray Thee, therefore, help Thy servants, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious Blood.\u201d \u00a0Help, then, us, Thy rebellious servants, since Thou hast redeemed us at so great a cost.\u00a0 O Jesus, my one and only Hope, Thou dost love me.\u00a0 Thou hast power to do all things; make me a Saint. \u00a0If I am weak, do Thou give me strength; if I am sick, in consequence of the sins I have committed, do Thou apply to my soul one drop of Thy Blood and heal me. \u00a0Give me love of Thee and final perseverance, making me die in Thy grace. \u00a0Give me Paradise; through Thy merits do I ask it of Thee, and hope to obtain it. \u00a0I love Thee, O my most lovely God, with all my soul; and I hope to love Thee always. \u00a0Oh, help a miserable sinner who wishes to love Thee alone!<\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Lectura espiritual:\u00a0\u00a0<i>\u00a1VITA, DULCEDO!  \u00a1SALVE, VIDA NUESTRA, DULZURA NUESTRA!<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">XVIII. Y es verdaderamente hecha mediadora de paz entre los pecadores y Dios: <em>Ya que me vuelvo en su presencia como quien encuentra la paz<\/em>.  Sobre estas palabras San Bernardo anima a los pecadores, diciendo: \"Acude a esta Madre de Misericordia y mu\u00e9strale las llagas que tus pecados han dejado en tu alma; entonces ciertamente suplicar\u00e1 a su Hijo, por los pechos que le amamantaron, que te perdone todo.  Y este Divino Hijo, que tan tiernamente la ama, ciertamente le conceder\u00e1 su petici\u00f3n\".  En este sentido es en el que la santa Iglesia, en su oraci\u00f3n casi diaria, nos exhorta a suplicar al Se\u00f1or que nos conceda la poderosa ayuda de la intercesi\u00f3n de Mar\u00eda para levantarnos de nuestros pecados: \"Concede, Dios misericordios\u00edsimo, tu ayuda a nuestra debilidad, y que nosotros, que tenemos presente a la santa Madre de Dios, podamos, con la ayuda de su intercesi\u00f3n, levantarnos de nuestras iniquidades.\"<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Con raz\u00f3n, pues, San Lorenzo Justiniano la llama \"la esperanza de los malhechores\", ya que s\u00f3lo Ella es la que les obtiene de Dios el perd\u00f3n.  Con raz\u00f3n San Bernardo la llama \"la escalera de los pecadores\", ya que Ella, la Reina m\u00e1s compasiva, extendiendo su mano hacia ellos, los saca del abismo del pecado y les permite ascender hasta Dios.  Con raz\u00f3n la llama un antiguo escritor \"la \u00fanica esperanza de los pecadores\", pues s\u00f3lo con su ayuda podemos esperar la remisi\u00f3n de nuestros pecados.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0San Juan Cris\u00f3stomo dice tambi\u00e9n \"que los pecadores reciben el perd\u00f3n por la sola intercesi\u00f3n de Mar\u00eda\".  Y por eso el Santo, en nombre de todos los pecadores, se dirige as\u00ed a ella: \"Dios te salve, Madre de Dios y de todos nosotros; Cielo donde Dios habita; trono, desde el cual nuestro Se\u00f1or dispensa toda gracia; gloria de nuestra Iglesia, ruega asiduamente a Jes\u00fas que en el D\u00eda del Juicio encontremos misericordia por medio de ti, y recibamos la recompensa preparada por Dios para los que le aman.\"<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Con raz\u00f3n, en fin, se llama a Mar\u00eda, seg\u00fan las palabras de los sagrados C\u00e1nticos, la aurora: <em>\u00bfQui\u00e9n es la que sale como el alba?<\/em> - (Cant. vi., 9).  S\u00ed, dice el Papa Inocencio III, \"pues as\u00ed como la aurora es el fin de la noche y el principio del d\u00eda, bien puede llamarse aurora del d\u00eda a la Sant\u00edsima Virgen Mar\u00eda, que fue el fin de los vicios\".  Cuando comienza en un alma la devoci\u00f3n a Mar\u00eda, produce el mismo efecto que produjo en el mundo el nacimiento de esta Sant\u00edsima Virgen.  Pone fin a la noche del pecado y conduce al alma por el camino de la virtud.  Por eso dice San Germ\u00e1n: \"Oh Madre de Dios, tu protecci\u00f3n nunca cesa, tu intercesi\u00f3n es vida, y tu patrocinio nunca falta\".  Y en un serm\u00f3n el mismo Santo dice que pronunciar el nombre de Mar\u00eda con afecto es se\u00f1al de vida en el alma, o al menos, de que la vida volver\u00e1 pronto a ella.<\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n vespertina:\u00a0\u00a0<i>LA PR\u00c1CTICA DEL AMOR DE JESUCRISTO\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">XXIV.  \"LA CARIDAD ES PACIENTE\". - EL ALMA QUE AMA A JESUCRISTO AMA SUFRIR<\/p><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n I:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0St. Joseph Calasanctius used to say: &#8220;All suffering is slight to gain Heaven.&#8221;\u00a0 And the Apostle had already said the same: The sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come, that shall be revealed in us. \u2014 (Rom. viii. 18).\u00a0 It would be a great gain for us to endure all the torments of all the Martyrs during our whole lives in order to enjoy one single moment of the bliss of Paradise.\u00a0 With what readiness, then, should we embrace our crosses, when we know that the sufferings of this transitory life will gain for us an everlasting beatitude!\u00a0 <em>Lo que al presente es moment\u00e1neo y leve de nuestra tribulaci\u00f3n, nos obra sobre medida un eterno peso de gloria<\/em>. \u2014 (2 Cor. iv. 17).\u00a0 St. Agapitus, while still a mere boy in years, was threatened by the tyrant to have his head covered with a red-hot helmet; on which he replied: &#8220;And what better fortune could possibly befall me than to lose my head here, to have it crowned hereafter in Heaven?&#8221;\u00a0 This thought made St. Francis exclaim:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\"Busco tal medida de dicha,<br \/>Que todos mis dolores parecen felicidad\".<\/p><p>Pero quien desee la corona del Para\u00edso debe necesariamente combatir y sufrir: <em>si sufrimos, tambi\u00e9n reinaremos<\/em>. \u2014 (2 Tim. ii. 12).\u00a0 We cannot get a reward without merit; and no merit is to be had without patience: <em>No es coronado, a menos que se esfuerce legalmente<\/em>. \u2014 (2 Tim. ii. 5).\u00a0 And the person that strives with the greatest patience shall have the greatest reward.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a1Qu\u00e9 cosa tan extra\u00f1a! Sin embargo, hay dos condiciones:<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0La primera es que, cuando le ofrezcamos nuestras devociones, nuestras almas est\u00e9n libres de pecado; de lo contrario, Ella se dirigir\u00eda a nosotros como se dirigi\u00f3 a un malvado soldado del que habla San Pedro Celestino.  Este soldado realizaba todos los d\u00edas alguna devoci\u00f3n en honor de la Sant\u00edsima Virgen.  Un d\u00eda en que padec\u00eda mucha hambre, se le apareci\u00f3 Mar\u00eda y le ofreci\u00f3 unas carnes riqu\u00edsimas, pero en un recipiente tan sucio que no se atrevi\u00f3 a probarlas.  \"Yo soy la Madre de Dios\", le dijo entonces la Sant\u00edsima Virgen, \"y he venido a saciar tu hambre\".  \"Pero, oh Se\u00f1ora\", respondi\u00f3 \u00e9l, \"no puedo comer de un vaso tan sucio\".  \"\u00bfY c\u00f3mo\", replic\u00f3 Mar\u00eda, \"puedes esperar que yo acepte tus devociones que se me ofrecen con el alma tan mancillada?\".  Al o\u00edr esto, el soldado se convirti\u00f3, se hizo ermita\u00f1o y vivi\u00f3 en un desierto durante treinta a\u00f1os.  Al morir, la Sant\u00edsima Virgen se le apareci\u00f3 de nuevo y se lo llev\u00f3 en persona al Cielo.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Decimos que es moralmente imposible que un cliente de Mar\u00eda se pierda; pero esto debe entenderse a condici\u00f3n de que viva sin pecado o, al menos, con el deseo de abandonarlo; pues entonces la Sant\u00edsima Virgen le ayudar\u00e1.  Pero si alguien, por el contrario, pecara con la esperanza de que Mar\u00eda le salvara, se har\u00eda indigno e incapaz de su protecci\u00f3n.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Ah, Reina m\u00eda, contin\u00faa guard\u00e1ndome del infierno; pues \u00bfde qu\u00e9 me servir\u00e1n tu misericordia y los favores que me has mostrado si me pierdo?  Si no am\u00e9 siempre, ahora al menos -despu\u00e9s de Dios- te amo sobre todas las cosas.  No permitas que te d\u00e9 la espalda ni a ti ni a Dios, que por tu intercesi\u00f3n me ha concedido tantas gracias.  \u00c1mame, oh Mar\u00eda, esperanza m\u00eda; s\u00e1lvame del infierno.  Pero s\u00e1lvame primero del pecado, que es el \u00fanico que puede condenarme a \u00e9l.<\/p><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n II:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The second condition is perseverance in devotion to Mary: \u201cPerseverance alone,\u201d says St. Bernard, \u201cwill merit a crown.\u201d \u00a0When Thomas a Kempis was a young man he used every day to have recourse to the Blessed Virgin with certain prayers; he one day omitted them; he then omitted them for some weeks, and finally gave them up altogether. \u00a0One night he saw Mary in a dream: she embraced all his companions, but when his turn came she said: \u201cWhat dost thou expect, thou who hast given up thy devotions?\u00a0 Depart, thou art unworthy of my caresses.\u201d \u00a0On hearing this Thomas awoke in alarm, and resumed his ordinary prayers. \u00a0Hence, Richard of St. Laurence with reason says that he who perseveres in his devotion to Mary will be blessed in his confidence and will obtain all he desires. \u00a0But as no one can be certain of this perseverance, no one before death can be certain of salvation. \u00a0The advice given by St. John Berchmans, of the Society of Jesus, deserves our particular attention. \u00a0When this holy young man was dying, his companions entreated him, before he left this world, to tell them what devotion they could perform which would be most agreeable to our Blessed Lady. \u00a0He replied in the following remarkable words: <em>Any devotion, however small, provided it is constant.<\/em> \u00a0Oh, how many are now in hell who would have been saved had they only persevered in the devotions they once practised in honour of Mary!<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 O my Mother, in thee have I placed all my hopes; from thee do I expect every grace. \u00a0Alas, miserable wretch that I am! \u00a0I have hitherto fallen because I have not had recourse to thee. \u00a0I now hope that, through the merits of Jesus Christ, and thy prayers, I have obtained pardon. \u00a0But I may again lose Divine grace; the danger is not past; my enemies do not sleep. \u00a0I know that thou wilt help me, and that with thy help I shall conquer if I recommend myself to thee: but this is what I fear, that in time of danger I may neglect to call upon thee and thus be lost. \u00a0I ask thee, then, for this grace, that in the assaults of hell I may always have recourse to thee by saying: O Mary help me! \u00a0My Mother, permit me not to lose my God!<\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Lectura espiritual:\u00a0\u00a0<i>\u00a1VITA, DULCEDO!  \u00a1SALVE, VIDA NUESTRA, DULZURA NUESTRA!<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">XIX.  MAR\u00cdA ES NUESTRA VIDA PORQUE NOS OBTIENE EL PERD\u00d3N DE NUESTROS PECADOS<\/p><p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Leemos en el Evangelio de San Lucas que Mar\u00eda dijo, <em>He aqu\u00ed que desde ahora me llamar\u00e1n bienaventurado todas las generaciones<\/em>. \u2014 (Luke i. 48).\u00a0 &#8220;Yes, my Lady,&#8221; exclaims St. Bernard, &#8220;all generations shall call thee blessed, for thou hast begotten life and glory for all generations of men.&#8221;\u00a0 For this cause all men shall call thee blessed, for all thy servants obtain through thee the life of grace and eternal glory.\u00a0 &#8220;In thee do sinners find pardon, and the just perseverance and eternal life.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Distrust not, O sinner,&#8221; says the devout Bernardine de Bustis, &#8220;even if thou hast committed all possible sins: go with confidence to this most glorious Lady, and thou wilt find her hands filled with mercy and bounty.&#8221;\u00a0 Because, he adds, &#8220;she desires more to do thee good than thou canst desire to receive favours from her.&#8221;<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0San Andr\u00e9s de Creta llama a Mar\u00eda la prenda de la misericordia divina; queriendo decir que cuando los pecadores recurren a Mar\u00eda para reconciliarse con Dios, \u00c9l les asegura el perd\u00f3n y les da una prenda de \u00e9l; y esta prenda es Mar\u00eda, a quien nos ha concedido por abogada, y por cuyas oraciones, en virtud de los m\u00e9ritos de Jesucristo, Dios perdona a todos los que recurren a Ella. Mar\u00eda es esa arca feliz, dice San Bernardo, \"en la que los que se refugian nunca sufrir\u00e1n el naufragio de la perdici\u00f3n eterna\".\"  En la \u00e9poca del diluvio incluso los brutos se salvaron en el Arca de No\u00e9.  Bajo el manto de Mar\u00eda incluso los pecadores obtienen la salvaci\u00f3n.  Santa Gertrudis vio una vez a Mar\u00eda con su manto extendido y bajo \u00e9l se hab\u00edan refugiado muchas bestias salvajes: leones, osos y tigres.  Y observ\u00f3 que Mar\u00eda no s\u00f3lo no los rechazaba, sino que incluso los acog\u00eda y acariciaba con la mayor ternura.  La Santa comprendi\u00f3 as\u00ed que los pecadores m\u00e1s abandonados que recurren a Mar\u00eda no s\u00f3lo no son rechazados, sino que son acogidos y salvados por Ella de la muerte eterna.  Entremos, pues, en esta arca, refugi\u00e9monos bajo el manto de Mar\u00eda, y Ella ciertamente no nos rechazar\u00e1, sino que nos asegurar\u00e1 la salvaci\u00f3n.<\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n vespertina:\u00a0\u00a0<i>LA PR\u00c1CTICA DEL AMOR DE JESUCRISTO\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">XXV.  \"LA CARIDAD ES PACIENTE\". - EL ALMA QUE AMA A JESUCRISTO AMA SUFRIR<\/p><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n I:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Convenz\u00e1monos de que en este valle de l\u00e1grimas no puede hallar la verdadera paz del coraz\u00f3n sino quien soporta y abraza amorosamente los sufrimientos para agradar a Dios Todopoderoso: \u00e9sta es la consecuencia de aquella corrupci\u00f3n en que todos est\u00e1n colocados por la infecci\u00f3n del pecado.  La condici\u00f3n de los santos en la tierra es sufrir y amar; la condici\u00f3n de los santos en el cielo es gozar y amar.  El Padre Pablo Segneri el Joven, en una carta que escribi\u00f3 a una de sus penitentes para animarla a sufrir, le dio el consejo de conservar estas palabras inscritas al pie de su Crucifijo:<em> As\u00ed se ama\u00a0<\/em> No es simplemente sufriendo, sino deseando sufrir por amor de Jesucristo, como un alma da las se\u00f1ales m\u00e1s seguras de amarle realmente.  \u00bfY qu\u00e9 mayor adquisici\u00f3n, dec\u00eda Santa Teresa, podemos hacer que tener alguna se\u00f1al de gratificar a Dios Todopoderoso?  Por desgracia, la mayor\u00eda de los hombres se alarman con s\u00f3lo mencionar las cruces, las humillaciones y las aflicciones.  Sin embargo, hay muchas almas que encuentran todo su deleite en el sufrimiento, y que estar\u00edan muy desconsoladas si pasaran su tiempo en esta tierra sin sufrir.  La visi\u00f3n de Jes\u00fas crucificado, dec\u00eda una persona devota, hace que la cruz sea tan hermosa para m\u00ed que me parece que nunca podr\u00eda ser feliz sin sufrimiento; el amor de Jesucristo es suficiente para m\u00ed en todas las circunstancias.  Jes\u00fas aconseja a todo el que quiera seguirle que tome y cargue con su cruz:<em> Que tome su cruz y me siga<\/em>. \u2014 (Luke ix. 23).\u00a0 But we must take it up and carry it, not by constraint and against our will, but with humility, patience, and love.<\/p><p><strong>Meditaci\u00f3n II:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh, how acceptable to God is he that humbly and patiently embraces the crosses He sends him!\u00a0 St. Ignatius of Loyola said: \u201cThere is no wood so apt to enkindle and maintain love towards God as the wood of the cross\u201d; that is, to love Him in the midst of sufferings. \u00a0One day St. Gertrude asked our Lord what she could offer Him most acceptable, and He replied: \u201cMy child, thou canst do nothing more gratifying to Me than to submit patiently to all the tribulations that befall thee.\u201d \u00a0Wherefore the great servant of God, Sister Victoria Angelini, affirmed that one day of crucifixion was worth a hundred years of all other spiritual exercises. \u00a0And the Blessed John of Avila said: \u201cOne Blessed be God!
