Contemplem l\u00e1 o p\u00f3, as cinzas, os vermes - e suspirem!\"  \u00d3 Deus, esse corpo mimado com tantas iguarias, vestido com tanta pompa - veja a que ele foi reduzido!  Os vermes, depois de terem consumido toda a carne, devoram uns aos outros e, no final, n\u00e3o resta nada al\u00e9m de um esqueleto f\u00e9tido.<\/p><p><b>Medita\u00e7\u00e3o I:<\/b><br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Observe como o cad\u00e1ver primeiro fica amarelo e depois preto. Depois, todo o corpo \u00e9 coberto por um bolor branco e repugnante; em seguida, surge um lodo pegajoso e f\u00e9tido que flui para a terra.  Nessa massa p\u00fatrida \u00e9 gerada uma grande quantidade de vermes que se alimentam da carne.  Os ratos v\u00eam se banquetear com o corpo; alguns o atacam por fora; outros entram pela boca e pelos intestinos.  As bochechas, os l\u00e1bios e os cabelos caem.  Primeiro, as costelas s\u00e3o desnudadas e, depois, os bra\u00e7os e as pernas.  Os vermes, depois de consumir toda a carne, devoram uns aos outros e, no final, n\u00e3o resta nada al\u00e9m de um esqueleto f\u00e9tido que, com o passar do tempo, se desfaz em peda\u00e7os.  Os ossos se separam uns dos outros e a cabe\u00e7a se separa do corpo.\u00a0 <em>Eles se tornaram como a palha de uma eira de ver\u00e3o e foram levados pelo vento<\/em>. - (Dan. ii., 35).<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Veja um jovem nobre que era a vida e a alma da conversa: onde ele est\u00e1 agora?  Entre em seu apartamento: ele n\u00e3o est\u00e1 mais l\u00e1.  Se procurar sua cama, suas vestes ou sua armadura, ver\u00e1 que passaram para as m\u00e3os de outros.  Se quiser v\u00ea-lo, volte-se para o t\u00famulo, onde ele se transformou em corrup\u00e7\u00e3o e ossos secos.  \u00d3 Deus, esse corpo, mimado com tantas iguarias, vestido com tanta pompa e atendido por tantos servos, a que est\u00e1 reduzido agora?  \u00d3 santos, que sab\u00edeis mortificar vossos corpos por amor ao Deus que s\u00f3 v\u00f3s amastes nesta terra, compreend\u00edeis bem o fim de toda grandeza humana, de todas as del\u00edcias terrenas!  Agora, seus ossos s\u00e3o honrados como rel\u00edquias sagradas e preservados em santu\u00e1rios de ouro, e suas almas est\u00e3o felizes no gozo de Deus, aguardando o \u00faltimo dia em que seus corpos ser\u00e3o feitos parceiros de sua gl\u00f3ria, assim como foram participantes de sua cruz nesta vida.  O verdadeiro amor pelo corpo consiste em trat\u00e1-lo aqui com rigor e desprezo, para que no futuro ele possa ser feliz, e em recusar-lhe agora todos os prazeres que possam torn\u00e1-lo miser\u00e1vel por toda a eternidade.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Veja, ent\u00e3o, \u00f3 meu Deus, a que este corpo, com o qual tanto Te ofendi, deve ser reduzido!  Aos vermes e \u00e0 podrid\u00e3o!  Isso n\u00e3o me aflige; pelo contr\u00e1rio, alegro-me com o fato de que esta minha carne, que me fez perder a Ti, meu Soberano Bem, um dia apodrecer\u00e1 e ser\u00e1 consumida.  O que me aflige \u00e9 o fato de que, para me entregar a esses prazeres miser\u00e1veis, eu tenha desagradado tanto a Ti.  Mas n\u00e3o vou me desesperar com Tua miseric\u00f3rdia.  O Senhor esperou por mim para me perdoar.  Tu me perdoar\u00e1s se eu me arrepender.  \u00d3 Bondade Infinita, eu me arrependo de todo o meu cora\u00e7\u00e3o por ter Te desprezado.  Direi com Santa Catarina de G\u00eanova: <em>Meu Jesus, chega de pecados!  Chega de pecados!\u00a0<\/em> N\u00e3o abusarei mais de Tua paci\u00eancia.  N\u00e3o esperarei at\u00e9 a hora da morte para come\u00e7ar a Te amar.  A partir deste momento, eu Te amo.  Eu Te abra\u00e7o e me uno a Ti, e prometo nunca mais me afastar de Ti.  \u00d3 Virgem Sant\u00edssima, prenda-me a Jesus Cristo e obtenha para mim a gra\u00e7a de nunca mais perd\u00ea-Lo.<\/p><p><strong>Medita\u00e7\u00e3o II:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In this picture of death behold yourself, and what you must one day become.\u00a0 <em>Remember that dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return<\/em>.\u00a0 Consider that in a few years, and perhaps in a few months or days, you will become rottenness and worms.\u00a0 By this thought Job became a Saint.\u00a0 I have said to rottenness: Thou art my father: to worms, my mother and my sister. \u2014 (Job, xvii., 14).<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All must end; and if, after death, you lose your soul all will be lost for you.\u00a0 Consider yourself already dead, says St. Laurence Justinian, since you know that you must of necessity die.\u00a0 If you were already dead, what would you not desire to have done?\u00a0 Now that you are alive, reflect that you will one day be among the dead.\u00a0 St. Bonaventure says, that to guide the vessel safely, the pilot must remain at the helm, and in like manner, to lead a good life, a man should always imagine himself at the hour of death.\u00a0 \u201cLook at the sins of your youth, and be covered with shame!\u201d says St. Bernard.\u00a0 \u201cLook at the sins of your manhood, and weep!\u00a0 Look at the disorders of your present life, and tremble!\u201d<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When St. Camillus of Lellis saw the graves of the dead, he said within himself: If these could return to life, what would they not do for eternal glory?\u00a0 And I, who have time, \u2013 what do I do for my soul?\u00a0 This the Saint said through humility.\u00a0 But you perhaps, have reason to fear that you are the barren fig-tree of which the Lord spoke: <em>Behold, for these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig-tree, and I find none<\/em>. \u2014 (Luke, xiii., 7).\u00a0 You have been in this world for more than three years, and what fruit have you produced?\u00a0 Remember, says St. Bernard, that the Lord seeks not only flowers but fruits; that is, not only good desires and resolutions, but also holy works.\u00a0 Learn then to profit by the time which God in His mercy gives you.\u00a0 Do not wait until you shall crave for time to do good, when time shall be no more.\u00a0 Do not wait till you are told: <em>O tempo n\u00e3o existir\u00e1 mais<\/em>. \u2014 (Apoc., x., 6).\u00a0 Depart!\u00a0 The time for leaving this world has arrived.\u00a0 What is done, is done!<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Behold, O my God, I am that tree which deserved for so many years to hear from Thee: <em>Cut it down!\u00a0 Why cumbereth it the ground?<\/em> \u2014 (Luke, xiii., 7).\u00a0 Yes; during the many years which I have been in the world, I have brought forth no other fruit than the briers and thorns of sin.\u00a0 But, O Lord, Thou dost not wish that I despair.\u00a0 Thou hast said to all, that he who seeks Thee shall find Thee.\u00a0 I seek Thee, O my God, and wish for Thy grace.\u00a0 For all the offences I have offered to Thee I am sorry with my whole heart.\u00a0 I would wish to die of sorrow for them.\u00a0 Hitherto I have fled from Thee, but now I prefer Thy friendship to the possession of all the kingdoms of the earth.\u00a0 I will no longer resist Thy invitations.\u00a0 Dost Thou wish me to be all Thine?\u00a0 I give Thee my whole being without reserve.\u00a0 Thou gavest Thyself entirely to me on the Cross.\u00a0 I give myself entirely to Thee.\u00a0 O Mary, my great advocate, do thou also listen to my cry and pray to Jesus for me.<\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Leitura espiritual:\u00a0 <em>PECADO ORIGINAL<\/em><\/strong><\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Medita\u00e7\u00e3o noturna:\u00a0 <em>A GRANDE DIGNIDADE E AS VANTAGENS DE UMA ALMA NA GRA\u00c7A DE DEUS<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Medita\u00e7\u00e3o I:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>If<\/em>diz o Senhor, <em>thou wilt separate the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth<\/em>. \u2014 (Jer. xv., 19).\u00a0 They who know how to distinguish what is precious from what is vile, are like God \u201cWho knows how to refuse the evil and to choose the good.\u201d\u00a0 Let us consider how great a good it is to be in the grace of God.\u00a0 Men do not understand the value of divine grace.\u00a0 <em>Man knoweth not the price thereof<\/em>. \u2014 (Job xxxviii., 13).\u00a0 Hence they exchange it for vanity, for a little earth, or for a beastly pleasure!\u00a0 But it is an infinite treasure which makes us worthy of the friendship of God.\u00a0 <em>For<\/em>diz o Homem S\u00e1bio, <em>she is an infinite treasure to men, which they that use become the friends of God<\/em>. \u2014 (Wis. vii., 14).\u00a0 Hence a soul in grace is the friend of God.\u00a0 The Gentiles, who were deprived of the light of Faith, deemed it impossible for a creature to attain to the friendship of God; and they, guided only by the light of nature, could scarcely think otherwise.\u00a0 But God has declared in several places in the Holy Scriptures, that by means of grace we become His friends if we observe His Law.\u00a0 <em>You are my friends if you do the things that I command you.\u00a0 I will not now call you servants . . . but I have called you friends<\/em>. \u2014 (John xv., 14, 15).\u00a0 Hence, St. Gregory exclaims: \u201cO Goodness of God!\u00a0 We do not deserve to be called even servants and He condescends to call us friends!\u201d<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How fortunate would the man esteem himself who should have a king for his friend!\u00a0 In a vassal it would be temerity to presume to seek the friendship of his sovereign, but it is not temerity in a soul to aspire to the friendship of its God.\u00a0 The most men can expect to gain in the service of an emperor is, to become his friends; and should they succeed in gaining his friendship, they will expose their eternal salvation to greater risk.\u00a0 It is with difficulty I can ever become the friend of Caesar, but if I wish, I am this moment the friend of God.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Whosoever is in the state of grace is the friend of God.\u00a0 He also becomes the child of God: <em>You are gods and the sons of the Most High<\/em>. \u2014 (Ps. lxxxi., 6).\u00a0 This is the great gift which we have received from the divine love through Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <em>Veja<\/em>, diz S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o, <em>what manner of charity the Father hath bestowed upon us that we should be called, and should be, the sons of God<\/em>. \u2014 (1 John iii., 1).\u00a0 Moreover, the soul in the state of grace is the spouse of God.\u00a0 <em>I will espouse thee to me in faith<\/em>. \u2014 (Osee, ii., 20).\u00a0 Lastly, the soul in grace is the temple of the Holy Ghost.\u00a0 Sister Mary d\u2019Oignies saw a devil go out from an infant who was receiving Baptism, and the Holy Ghost enter with a multitude of Angels.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Therefore, O my God, when my soul had the happiness of being in Thy grace, it was Thy friend, Thy child, Thy spouse, and Thy temple; but by committing sin, it lost all and became Thy enemy and the slave of hell.\u00a0 But I thank Thee, O my God, for giving me time to recover Thy grace.\u00a0 I am sorry above all things for having offended Thee, O infinite Goodness, and I love Thee above all things.\u00a0 Ah! receive me again into Thy friendship.\u00a0 For Thy Mercy\u2019s sake do not reject me.\u00a0 I know that I deserve to be banished from Thy face, but by the Sacrifice which He offered on Calvary, Jesus Christ has merited for me mercy and pardon.\u00a0 <em>And lead us not into temptation<\/em>.\u00a0 Ah! do not permit my enemies to tempt me so that I may be conquered.\u00a0 <em>But deliver us from evil<\/em>.\u00a0 Deliver me from hell; but deliver me first from sin, which alone can lead me to hell.\u00a0 O Mary, pray for me and preserve me from the great misfortune of ever seeing myself in sin and deprived of the grace of thy God and mine.<\/p><p><strong>Medita\u00e7\u00e3o II:<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 St. Thomas of Aquin says that the gift of God\u2019s grace surpasses all created nature since it is a participation of the divine nature.\u00a0 And St. Peter said the same: <em>that by these ye may be made partakers of the divine nature<\/em>. \u2014 (2 Pet. i., 4).\u00a0 Such great things Jesus Christ merited for us by His Passion: He has even communicated to us the same splendour that He received from the Father.\u00a0 <em>And the glory which thou hast given to me, I have given to them<\/em>. \u2014 (John xvii., 22).\u00a0 In fine, a soul in the state of grace is one with God.\u00a0 <em>He<\/em>, diz S\u00e3o Paulo, <em>that is joined to the Lord is one spirit<\/em>. \u2014 (Cor. vi., 17).\u00a0 The Redeemer has said that in a soul that loves God, the Three Persons of the Most Holy Trinity dwell.\u00a0 <em>If any one love me, my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and we will make our abode with him<\/em>. - (Jo\u00e3o xiv., 23).<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So great is the beauty of a soul in the state of grace that God Himself extols it.\u00a0 <em>How beautiful art thou!\u00a0 How beautiful art thou!<\/em> \u2014 (Cant. iv., 1).\u00a0 The Lord appears never to take His eyes off the soul that loves Him, nor to close His ears to its petitions.\u00a0 <em>The eyes of the Lord are upon the just: and his ears unto their prayers<\/em>. \u2014 (Ps. xxxiii., 16).\u00a0 St. Bridget used to say that one could not behold the beauty of a soul in the grace of God and not die for very joy.\u00a0 And St. Catherine of Sienna seeing a soul in the state of grace, said that she would willingly have given her life to prevent that soul from losing such beauty.\u00a0 Hence she kissed the ground on which priests walked, because through them souls recover the grace of God.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How many treasures of merits can a soul in the state of grace acquire?\u00a0 Each moment it can merit an eternity of glory.\u00a0 St. Thomas teaches that every act of love merits for the soul eternal life.\u00a0 Why then should we envy the great ones of the earth?\u00a0 If we are in the grace of God, we can constantly acquire far more greatness in Heaven.\u00a0 A certain Lay-Brother of the Society of Jesus, appeared after death, and said that he and Philip the Second of Spain were in the enjoyment of glory; but that his glory in Heaven was as far superior to that of Philip, as that monarch was raised above him on this earth.\u00a0 Moreover, he alone who has experienced it can conceive the peace which a soul in the grace of God enjoys even in this life.\u00a0 <em>O taste and see that the Lord is sweet<\/em>. \u2014 (Ps. xxxiii., 9).\u00a0 The words of the Lord cannot fail.\u00a0 <em>Much peace have they that love thy law<\/em>. \u2014 (Ps. cxviii., 165).\u00a0 The peace of a soul united with God, surpasses all the pleasures of the senses and the world.\u00a0 <em>A paz de Deus que excede todo o entendimento<\/em>. \u2014 (Phil. iv., 7).<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 O my Jesus, Thou art the good Shepherd, Who allowed Thyself to be slaughtered in order to give life to Thy sheep.\u00a0 When I fled away from Thee, Thou didst not cease to follow and seek after me.\u00a0 Thou receivest me now that I seek Thee and cast myself with a penitent heart at Thy feet.\u00a0 Give me Thy grace which I have miserably lost through my own fault.\u00a0 I am sorry for it with my whole heart; I would wish to die of sorrow at the thought of having so often turned my back on Thee.\u00a0 Since I have merited the eternal torments of hell, give me strength to bear with patience all the crosses which Thou sendest me.\u00a0 And since I have deserved to be for eternity under the feet of the devils, make me to embrace with love all the contempt and insults which I shall receive from men.\u00a0 Finally, make me obedient to all Thy holy inspirations, and give me grace to conquer all human respect for the love of Thee.\u00a0 I am resolved henceforward to serve Thee only: let others say and do what they please, I will serve Thee alone, O my most amiable God!\u00a0 Thee only do I wish to please.\u00a0 But give me Thy grace without which I can do nothing.\u00a0 I love Thee, O my Jesus, with my whole heart, and I trust in Thy Blood.\u00a0 Mary, my hope, assist me by thy prayers.\u00a0 I glory in being thy servant, and thou dost glory in saving sinners who have recourse to thee.\u00a0 Come to my relief and save me.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1523\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1523\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">TER\u00c7A-FEIRA DA PRIMEIRA SEMANA AP\u00d3S A EPIFANIA<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1523\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1523\"><p><b>Medita\u00e7\u00e3o matinal:  A SENTEN\u00c7A DE MORTE<\/b><\/p><p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<em>Quem \u00e9 o homem que viver\u00e1 e n\u00e3o ver\u00e1 a morte?<\/em>\u00a0 A senten\u00e7a j\u00e1 foi proferida.  O fogo, a \u00e1gua, a espada e o poder dos pr\u00edncipes, diz Santo Agostinho, podem ser resistidos, mas <em>morte -<\/em>\u00a0quem resistir\u00e1 a ela?\u00a0 <em>Aos homens est\u00e1 ordenado morrerem uma vez.<\/em><\/p><p><b>Medita\u00e7\u00e3o I:<\/b><br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0A senten\u00e7a de morte foi escrita contra todos os homens.  Voc\u00ea \u00e9 um homem, portanto, deve morrer.  \"Nossas outras coisas boas e m\u00e1s\", diz Santo Agostinho, \"s\u00e3o incertas; somente a morte \u00e9 certa\".  \u00c9 incerto se o beb\u00ea que acaba de nascer ser\u00e1 rico ou pobre; se ter\u00e1 boa ou m\u00e1 sa\u00fade; se morrer\u00e1 na juventude ou na velhice.  Mas \u00e9 certo que ele morrer\u00e1.  O golpe da morte cair\u00e1 sobre todos os nobres e monarcas da Terra.  Quando a morte chega, n\u00e3o h\u00e1 poder terreno capaz de resistir a ela.  Santo Agostinho diz: \"O fogo, a \u00e1gua, a espada e o poder dos pr\u00edncipes podem ser resistidos, mas <em>morte<\/em>quem resistir\u00e1 a ela?\"  Conta-se que, no final de sua vida, um certo rei da Fran\u00e7a disse: \"Com todo o meu poder, n\u00e3o posso induzir a morte a esperar mais uma hora por mim.\"  Quando o fim da vida chega, ele n\u00e3o \u00e9 adiado um \u00fanico momento.\u00a0 <em>Tu estabeleceste os seus limites, que n\u00e3o podem ser ultrapassados<\/em>. - (J\u00f3 xiv., 5).<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Caro crist\u00e3o, ainda que voc\u00ea viva tantos anos quanto espera, chegar\u00e1 um dia, e nesse dia uma hora, que ser\u00e1 a \u00faltima hora para voc\u00ea.  Para mim, que estou escrevendo agora, e para voc\u00ea que l\u00ea este pequeno livro, foi decretado o dia e o momento em que n\u00e3o mais escreverei e voc\u00ea n\u00e3o mais ler\u00e1.\u00a0 <em>Quem \u00e9 o homem que viver\u00e1 e n\u00e3o ver\u00e1 a morte?<\/em> - (Sl. lxxxviii., 49).  A senten\u00e7a j\u00e1 foi proferida.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Infeliz de mim, que passei tantos anos apenas ofendendo-Te, \u00f3 Deus da minha alma.  Eis que esses anos j\u00e1 se passaram: a morte talvez esteja pr\u00f3xima, e o que encontro al\u00e9m de dores e remorso de consci\u00eancia?  Oh, se eu sempre tivesse servido a Ti, meu Senhor!  Tolo que tenho sido!  Vivi tantos anos nesta terra e, em vez de adquirir m\u00e9ritos para o c\u00e9u, sobrecarreguei minha alma com d\u00edvidas para com a justi\u00e7a divina.  Ah, meu querido Redentor, d\u00ea-me luz e for\u00e7a agora para ajustar minhas contas.  Talvez a morte n\u00e3o esteja longe.  Desejo me preparar para aquele grande momento que decidir\u00e1 minha felicidade ou mis\u00e9ria eterna.  Agrade\u00e7o-Te por ter esperado por mim at\u00e9 agora; e j\u00e1 que me deste tempo para reparar o passado, dize-me, \u00f3 meu Deus, o que devo fazer por Ti.  O Senhor deseja que eu chore pelas ofensas que ofereci a Ti?  Sinto muito por elas e as detesto com toda a minha alma.  Deseja que eu passe os anos e dias restantes de minha vida amando-O?  Desejo fazer isso, \u00f3 Deus; at\u00e9 agora, resolvi fazer isso com frequ\u00eancia, mas violei minhas promessas. Assim como ao falar daqueles que j\u00e1 partiram, voc\u00ea diz: Deus seja misericordioso com meu pai, com meu tio, com meu irm\u00e3o, - assim outros dir\u00e3o o mesmo de voc\u00eas.  Assim como voc\u00eas ouviram o sino da morte tocar para muitos, outros o ouvir\u00e3o tocar para voc\u00eas.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Mas o que voc\u00ea diria se visse um homem a caminho do local da execu\u00e7\u00e3o, brincando, rindo, olhando em todas as dire\u00e7\u00f5es e pensando apenas em com\u00e9dias, festividades e divers\u00f5es?  E voc\u00ea n\u00e3o est\u00e1 agora a caminho da morte?  Quais s\u00e3o os objetos de seus pensamentos?  Contemplem naquele t\u00famulo seus amigos e parentes que j\u00e1 foram condenados pela justi\u00e7a.  Qu\u00e3o grandes s\u00e3o o terror e o des\u00e2nimo de um homem condenado \u00e0 morte, quando ele v\u00ea seus companheiros pendurados mortos na forca! O mesmo lhe \u00e9 dito pelos retratos de seus parentes falecidos, pelos livros de anota\u00e7\u00f5es, pelas casas, pelas camas, pelas roupas que eles deixaram.  Ontem para mim!  Hoje para voc\u00ea!<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Meu amado Redentor, eu n\u00e3o me atreveria a comparecer diante de Ti, se n\u00e3o Te visse pendurado na cruz, dilacerado, desprezado e sem vida, por amor a mim.  Minha ingratid\u00e3o foi grande, mas Tua miseric\u00f3rdia \u00e9 ainda maior.  Meus pecados foram muito graves, mas Teus m\u00e9ritos excedem a enormidade deles. Oh, qu\u00e3o corretamente os homens avaliam as coisas, e qu\u00e3o bem direcionadas s\u00e3o suas a\u00e7\u00f5es, cujos julgamentos s\u00e3o formados e cuja conduta \u00e9 regulada em vista da morte!  \"Considere o fim da vida\", diz S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o Justiniano, \"e voc\u00ea n\u00e3o amar\u00e1 nada neste mundo\".\u00a0 <em>Tudo o que h\u00e1 no mundo \u00e9 a concupisc\u00eancia da carne, a concupisc\u00eancia dos olhos e a soberba da vida.<\/em> - (1 Jo\u00e3o, ii., 16).  Todos os bens desta terra s\u00e3o reduzidos aos prazeres dos sentidos, \u00e0s riquezas e honras.  Mas tudo isso \u00e9 prontamente desprezado pelo homem que considera que, depois de ser o alimento dos vermes na sepultura, ele logo ser\u00e1 reduzido a p\u00f3.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0E, na realidade, foi em vista da morte que os santos desprezaram todos os bens desta terra.  S\u00e3o Carlos Borromeu mantinha em sua mesa um cr\u00e2nio para que pudesse contempl\u00e1-lo continuamente.  O Cardeal Baronius tinha inscrito em seu anel as palavras, <em>Memento Mori!  Lembre-se da morte!<\/em>\u00a0 O Vener\u00e1vel Padre Juvenal Ancina, Bispo de Saluzzo, mandou escrever este lema em um cr\u00e2nio: \"O que voc\u00ea \u00e9, eu era; e o que eu sou, voc\u00ea ser\u00e1\".  Quando perguntaram a um santo eremita, ao morrer, como ele podia estar t\u00e3o alegre, ele respondeu: \"Sempre mantive a morte diante de meus olhos e, portanto, agora que ela chegou, n\u00e3o vejo nada de novo nela.\"<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Ent\u00e3o, com a morte, tudo ter\u00e1 chegado ao fim para mim!  Ent\u00e3o, encontrarei apenas o pouco que fiz por Ti, \u00f3 meu Deus, e o que estou esperando!  Ser\u00e1 que vou esperar at\u00e9 que a morte chegue e me encontre t\u00e3o miser\u00e1vel e contaminado pelo pecado como estou agora?  Se eu fosse agora chamado para a eternidade, morreria com grande inquieta\u00e7\u00e3o por causa de meus pecados passados.  N\u00e3o, meu Jesus, n\u00e3o morrerei em um estado t\u00e3o triste.  Eu Te agrade\u00e7o por ter me dado tempo para chorar por minhas iniq\u00fcidades e Te amar.  Quero come\u00e7ar a partir deste momento. Mas a morte p\u00f5e fim a todos esses bens terrenos.\u00a0 <em>Pois o que \u00e9 sua vida?  \u00c9 um vapor que aparece por um pouco de tempo<\/em>.  \u00d3 meu Jesus, quantas vezes, por causa dos miser\u00e1veis prazeres e bens desta terra, eu Te ofendi e perdi a Ti, que \u00e9s um Bem Infinito!<\/p><p><b>Medita\u00e7\u00e3o I:<\/b><br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<em>Pois o que \u00e9 sua vida?  \u00c9 um vapor que aparece por um pouco de tempo<\/em>. - (Tiago iv., 15).  Os vapores exalados da terra, quando elevados no ar e revestidos pela luz do sol, t\u00eam uma apar\u00eancia espl\u00eandida, mas quanto tempo dura esse esplendor?  Ele desaparece antes da primeira rajada de vento.  Veja aquele nobre: hoje lisonjeado, temido e quase adorado; amanh\u00e3 morto, desprezado, injuriado e pisoteado.  Na morte, devemos deixar todas as coisas.  O irm\u00e3o daquele grande servo de Deus, Thomas \u00e0 Kempis, gostava de falar de uma bela casa que ele havia constru\u00eddo para si mesmo: um amigo lhe disse que ela tinha um grande defeito.  \"Qual \u00e9?\", perguntou ele.  \"\u00c9\", respondeu o outro, \"que voc\u00ea fez uma porta nela\".  \"O qu\u00ea!\", replicou o irm\u00e3o de \u00c0 Kempis, \"uma porta \u00e9 um defeito?\"  \"Sim\", respondeu o amigo; \"porque por essa porta voc\u00ea deve um dia ser levado morto e deve deixar a casa e tudo o mais\".<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Em uma palavra, a morte despoja o homem de todos os bens deste mundo.  Oh, que espet\u00e1culo ver um pr\u00edncipe ser banido de seu pal\u00e1cio para nunca mais voltar a ele; e ver outros se apoderarem de seus m\u00f3veis, seu dinheiro e todos os seus outros bens!  Os servos o deixam no t\u00famulo com uma roupa que mal d\u00e1 para cobrir seu corpo.  N\u00e3o h\u00e1 mais ningu\u00e9m que o estime ou bajule, ningu\u00e9m que atenda \u00e0s suas ordens.  Saladino, que havia adquirido muitos reinos na \u00c1sia, deu instru\u00e7\u00f5es ao morrer para que, quando seu corpo fosse levado ao local do sepultamento, uma pessoa fosse \u00e0 frente, segurando um len\u00e7ol suspenso em um poste, e gritasse em voz alta \"Isto \u00e9 tudo o que Saladino leva com ele para o t\u00famulo\".<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Meu Senhor, j\u00e1 que Tu me d\u00e1s luz para saber que tudo o que o mundo estima \u00e9 fuma\u00e7a e loucura, concede-me for\u00e7as para desapegar meu cora\u00e7\u00e3o dos bens terrenos antes que a morte me separe deles.  Miser\u00e1vel que eu tenha sido!  Quantas vezes, por causa dos prazeres e bens miser\u00e1veis desta terra, ofendi e perdi a Ti, que \u00e9s um Bem Infinito!  \u00d3 Jesus, meu M\u00e9dico celestial, lan\u00e7a Teus olhos sobre minha pobre alma, olha para as muitas feridas que lhe infligi com meus pecados e tem piedade de mim.\u00a0 <em>Se voc\u00ea quiser, pode me deixar limpo<\/em>. - (Mt. viii., 2).  Sei que o Senhor \u00e9 capaz e est\u00e1 disposto a me curar; mas, para me curar, o Senhor deseja que eu me arrependa das ofensas que cometi contra o Senhor. Cure-me, ent\u00e3o, agora que est\u00e1 em Seu poder me curar.\u00a0 <em>Curai a minha alma, pois pequei contra v\u00f3s<\/em>. - (Sl. xl., 5).<\/p><p><strong>Medita\u00e7\u00e3o II:<\/strong><\/p><hr \/><p><strong>Leitura Espiritual:  AS COISAS QUE DEVEMOS SABER E CRER<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Alguns s\u00e3o necess\u00e1rios por necessidade de meios e outros por necessidade de preceito<\/p><p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0H\u00e1 alguns artigos em que se pode acreditar <em>necessidade de meios<\/em> sem os quais n\u00e3o podemos obter a salva\u00e7\u00e3o; outros por <em>necessidade de preceito<\/em>.  A necessidade de <em>significa<\/em> implica que, se n\u00e3o acreditarmos em certas Regras de F\u00e9, n\u00e3o poderemos ser salvos.  A necessidade de <em>preceito<\/em> significa que devemos acreditar em certos outros artigos propostos pela Igreja, mas se acontecer de n\u00e3o os conhecermos por ignor\u00e2ncia invenc\u00edvel, seremos absolvidos do pecado e poderemos ser salvos.<\/p><p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a01. Quando os disc\u00edpulos duvidaram, ela n\u00e3o duvidou.  Ela viu Jesus chorar e acreditou que Ele era a Alegria do Para\u00edso.  Ela O viu na morte, desprezado e crucificado, e embora a f\u00e9 tenha vacilado em outros, Maria permaneceu firme na cren\u00e7a de que Ele era Deus.  \u00d3 Virgem Maria, aumente nossa f\u00e9!<\/p><p><b>Medita\u00e7\u00e3o I:<\/b><br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Assim como a Sant\u00edssima Virgem \u00e9 a M\u00e3e do santo Amor e da Esperan\u00e7a, ela tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 a M\u00e3e da F\u00e9: <em>Sou a m\u00e3e do amor justo, do medo, do conhecimento e da santa esperan\u00e7a<\/em>. - (Ecclus. xxiv., 24).  E com raz\u00e3o \u00e9 assim, diz Santo Irineu, pois \"o mal causado pela incredulidade de Eva foi remediado pela f\u00e9 de Maria\".  Isso \u00e9 confirmado por Tertuliano, que diz que Eva, por ter acreditado na serpente, contrariando a garantia que havia recebido de Deus, trouxe a morte ao mundo; mas nossa Rainha, por ter acreditado no Anjo quando ele disse que ela, permanecendo virgem, se tornaria a M\u00e3e de Deus, trouxe a salva\u00e7\u00e3o ao mundo.  Pois Santo Agostinho diz que \"quando Maria consentiu na encarna\u00e7\u00e3o do Verbo Eterno, por meio de sua f\u00e9, ela abriu o c\u00e9u aos homens\".  Ricardo de S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o, sobre as palavras de S\u00e3o Paulo, <em>pois o marido incr\u00e9dulo \u00e9 santificado pela esposa crente<\/em> - (Cor. vii., 14), diz que \"Maria \u00e9 a mulher crente por cuja f\u00e9 o incr\u00e9dulo Ad\u00e3o e toda a sua posteridade foram salvos\".  Portanto, por causa de sua f\u00e9, Isabel chamou a santa Virgem de bem-aventurada: <em>Bem-aventurado \u00e9 voc\u00ea que creu, porque em voc\u00ea se cumprir\u00e3o as coisas que foram ditas pelo Senhor<\/em>. - (Lucas i., 45).   E Santo Agostinho acrescenta que Maria foi mais aben\u00e7oada ao receber a f\u00e9 de Cristo do que ao conceber a carne de Cristo.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0O Padre Suarez diz que a Sant\u00edssima Virgem tinha mais f\u00e9 do que todos os homens e anjos.  Ela viu seu Filho no pres\u00e9pio de Bel\u00e9m e acreditou que Ele era o Criador do mundo.  Ela o viu fugir de Herodes e ainda assim acreditou que Ele era o Rei dos reis.  Ela O viu nascer e acreditou que Ele era eterno.  Ela O viu pobre e necessitado de alimento, e acreditou que Ele era o Senhor do universo.  Ela O viu deitado sobre a palha e acreditou que Ele era Onipotente.  Ela observou que Ele n\u00e3o falava e acreditou que Ele era a Sabedoria Infinita.  Ela O ouviu chorar e acreditou que Ele era a Alegria do Para\u00edso.  Por fim, ela O viu na morte, desprezado e crucificado, e, embora a f\u00e9 vacilasse em outros, Maria permaneceu firme na cren\u00e7a de que Ele era Deus.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Sobre essas palavras do Evangelho, <em>estava ao lado da cruz de Jesus, sua m\u00e3e<\/em> - (Jo\u00e3o xix, 25), Santo Antonino diz: \"Maria foi sustentada por sua f\u00e9, que ela manteve firme na divindade de Cristo\".  E por essa raz\u00e3o, acrescenta o Santo, que no of\u00edcio de <em>Tenebrae<\/em> apenas uma vela \u00e9 deixada acesa.  S\u00e3o Le\u00e3o, sobre esse assunto, aplica \u00e0 Nossa Senhora as palavras dos Prov\u00e9rbios, <em>Sua l\u00e2mpada n\u00e3o se apagar\u00e1 durante a noite<\/em>. - (Prov. xxxi., 18).<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Portanto, Maria mereceu, por sua grande F\u00e9, tornar-se \"a luz de todos os fi\u00e9is\", como a chama S\u00e3o Met\u00f3dio, e a \"Rainha da verdadeira F\u00e9\", como \u00e9 chamada por S\u00e3o Cirilo de Alexandria.
