Medita\u00e7\u00e3o matinal:\u00a0 V. COMO CONVERSAR CONT\u00cdNUA E FAMILIARMENTE COM DEUS<\/em><\/b><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Pense no Senhor em sua bondade<\/em>. Com essas palavras, o S\u00e1bio nos exorta a ter mais confian\u00e7a na Miseric\u00f3rdia de Deus do que medo de Sua Justi\u00e7a divina, pois Deus est\u00e1 imensamente mais inclinado a conceder favores do que a punir.\u00a0 A miseric\u00f3rdia se exalta acima do ju\u00edzo<\/em>.<\/p>

Medita\u00e7\u00e3o I:
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Pense no Senhor em sua bondade<\/em>. \u2014 (Wis. i. 1).\u00a0 In these words the Wise Man exhorts us to have more confidence in the divine mercy than dread of the divine justice; for God is immeasurably more inclined to bestow favours than to punish; as St. James says, A miseric\u00f3rdia se exalta acima do ju\u00edzo<\/em>. \u2014 (James ii. 13).\u00a0 Hence the Apostle St. Peter tells us that in all fears, whether about our interests for time or for eternity, we should commit ourselves altogether to the goodness of our God, Who has the greatest care of our safety: Lan\u00e7ando sobre ele toda a vossa ansiedade, porque ele tem cuidado de v\u00f3s<\/em>. \u2014 (1 Peter v. 7).\u00a0 Oh, what a beautiful meaning does this lend to the title which David gives to the Lord, when he says that our God is the God Who makes it His care to save: Nosso Deus \u00e9 o Deus da salva\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em> \u2014 (Ps. lxvii. 21), which signifies, as Bellarmine explains it, that the office peculiar to the Lord is, not to condemn, but to save all.\u00a0 For while He threatens with His displeasure those who disregard Him, He promises, on the other hand, His assured mercies to those who fear Him, as the divine Mother said in her Canticle: E sua miseric\u00f3rdia \u00e9 para aqueles que o temem<\/em>. \u2014 (Luke i. 50).\u00a0 I set before you, devout soul, all these passages of Scripture, that when the thought disquiets you \u2013 Am I to be saved or not?\u00a0 Am I predestined or not? \u2013 You may take courage, and understand from the promises He makes you what desire God has to save you, if only you are resolved to serve Him and to love Him as He commands.<\/p>

Medita\u00e7\u00e3o II:
<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When you receive pleasant news, do not act like those unfaithful, thankless souls who have recourse to God in time of trouble, but in time of prosperity forget and forsake Him. \u00a0Be as faithful to Him as you would to a friend who loves you and rejoices in your good; and, go therefore, at once and tell Him of your gladness, and praise Him and give Him thanks, acknowledging it all as a gift from His hands; and rejoice in that happiness because it comes to you of His good pleasure. \u00a0Rejoice, therefore, and comfort yourself in Him alone: I will rejoice in the Lord and I will joy in God my Jesus. \u2014 <\/em>(Habac. ii. 18). \u00a0Say to Him: My Jesus, I bless, and will ever bless Thee, for granting me so many favours, when I deserved at Thy hands not favours, but chastisements for the affronts I have offered Thee. \u00a0All fruits, the new and the old, my Beloved, I have kept for thee. \u2014 <\/em>(Cant. vii. 13). \u00a0Lord, I give Thee thanks; I keep in memory all Thy bounties, past and present, to render Thee praise and glory for them for ever and ever.
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But if you love your God, you ought to rejoice more in His blessedness than in your own. \u00a0He who loves a friend very much, sometimes takes more delight in that friend\u2019s good name than if it were his own. \u00a0Comfort yourself, then, in the knowledge that your God is infinitely blessed. \u00a0Often say to Him: My beloved Lord, I rejoice more in Thy blessedness than in any good of mine; yes, for I love Thee more than I love myself.
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Another mark of confidence highly pleasing to your most loving God is this: that when you have committed any fault, you be not ashamed to go at once to His feet and seek His pardon. \u00a0Consider that God is so greatly inclined to pardon sinners that He laments their perdition, when they depart far from Him and live as dead to His grace. \u00a0Therefore does He lovingly call them, saying: Why will you die, O house of Israel?\u00a0 Return ye, and live. \u2014 <\/em>(Ezech. xviii. 31, 32). \u00a0He promises to receive the soul that has forsaken Him, as soon as she returns to His arms: Turn ye to me,. . . and I will turn to you. <\/em>\u2014 (Zach. i. 3). \u00a0Oh, if sinners did but know with what tender mercy the Lord stands waiting to forgive them! \u00a0The Lord waiteth, that he may have mercy on you. <\/em>\u2014 (Is. xxx. 18). \u00a0Oh, did they but know the desire He has, not to chastise, but to see them converted, that He may embrace them, that He may press them to His Heart! \u00a0He declares: As<\/em> I live, saith, the Lord God, I desire not the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. \u2014 <\/em>(Ezech. xxxiii. 11). \u00a0He even says: And then come and accuse me, saith the Lord: if your sins be as scarlet, they shall be made as white as snow. \u2014 <\/em>(Is. i. 18). \u00a0As though He had said: Sinners, repent of having offended Me; if I do not pardon you, accuse me;<\/em> upbraid Me, and treat Me as one unfaithful. \u00a0But no, I will not be wanting to My promise.\u00a0 If you will come, know this: that though your consciences are dyed deep as crimson by your sins, I will make them by My grace as white as snow. \u00a0In a word, God has declared that when a soul repents of having offended Him, He forgets all its sins: I will not remember all his iniquities. <\/em>\u2014 (Ezech. xviii. 22).<\/p>

VIG\u00c9SIMA QUINTA VISITA<\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0S\u00e3o Paulo elogia a obedi\u00eancia de Jesus Cristo, dizendo que Ele obedeceu a Seu Pai Eterno at\u00e9 a morte: tornando-se obediente at\u00e9 a morte<\/em>. - (Filipenses ii., 8). Mas neste Sacramento Ele foi ainda mais longe; pois aqui Ele se agradou em tornar-se obediente, n\u00e3o apenas a Seu Pai Eterno, mas tamb\u00e9m ao homem; e n\u00e3o apenas at\u00e9 a morte, mas enquanto o mundo durar; de modo que podemos dizer: \"Ele se tornou obediente at\u00e9 a consuma\u00e7\u00e3o do mundo\". Ele, o Rei do C\u00e9u, desce do C\u00e9u em obedi\u00eancia ao homem, e ent\u00e3o parece habitar e conversar l\u00e1, a fim de obedecer aos homens: E eu n\u00e3o resisto<\/em>. Ali Ele permanece sem se mover; Ele se permite ser colocado onde os homens quiserem, seja para a exposi\u00e7\u00e3o no ostens\u00f3rio, ou para ser encerrado no Tabern\u00e1culo. Ele se permite ser carregado para onde quer que seja levado, seja nas casas ou pelas ruas; Ele se permite ser dado na Comunh\u00e3o a quem quer que seja administrado, sejam justos ou pecadores. S\u00e3o Lucas diz que, enquanto habitava a terra, obedecia \u00e0 Sant\u00edssima Virgem Maria e a S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9; mas, neste Sacramento, obedece a tantas criaturas quantos s\u00e3o os sacerdotes na terra: e eu n\u00e3o resisto<\/em>. - (Is. l., 5).
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Permita-me agora dirigir-me a Ti, \u00f3 amoros\u00edssimo Cora\u00e7\u00e3o de meu Jesus, do qual, de fato, brotaram todos os Sacramentos, mas principalmente este Sacramento do amor. De bom grado, eu Lhe daria tanta gl\u00f3ria e honra quanto a que o Senhor d\u00e1 ao Pai Eterno no Santo Sacramento. Sei que neste altar V\u00f3s ainda me amais com o mesmo amor com que me amastes quando encerrastes Vossa vida divina em meio a tanta ang\u00fastia na Cruz. \u00d3 Cora\u00e7\u00e3o Divino, ilumina todos aqueles que n\u00e3o Te conhecem com o conhecimento de Ti mesmo! Por Teus m\u00e9ritos, livra do Purgat\u00f3rio, ou pelo menos alivia, as almas aflitas, que j\u00e1 s\u00e3o Tuas esposas por toda a eternidade. Eu Vos adoro, Vos agrade\u00e7o, Vos amo, em uni\u00e3o com todas as almas que neste momento Vos amam, seja na Terra ou no C\u00e9u. \u00d3 Cora\u00e7\u00e3o pur\u00edssimo, purificai meu cora\u00e7\u00e3o de todo apego \u00e0s criaturas e enchei-o de Vosso santo amor! \u00d3 Cora\u00e7\u00e3o dulc\u00edssimo de Jesus, possui meu cora\u00e7\u00e3o, para que doravante ele seja todo Teu e possa sempre dizer: Quem, pois, nos separar\u00e1 do amor de Deus, (...) que est\u00e1 em Cristo Jesus, nosso Senhor?<\/em> - (Rom. viii., 38). Escrevei, \u00f3 Sacrat\u00edssimo Cora\u00e7\u00e3o de Jesus, em meu cora\u00e7\u00e3o todas as dores amargas que durante tantos anos suportastes na terra com tanto amor por mim, para que, ao v\u00ea-las, eu deseje, ou pelo menos suporte com paci\u00eancia, todas as dores desta vida. Cora\u00e7\u00e3o humild\u00edssimo de Jesus, dai-me uma parte de Vossa humildade. Cora\u00e7\u00e3o mans\u00edssimo, dai-me a Vossa do\u00e7ura. Tirai de meu cora\u00e7\u00e3o tudo o que Vos desagrada; convertei-o inteiramente a V\u00f3s, de modo que eu n\u00e3o possa mais querer ou desejar sen\u00e3o o que V\u00f3s quereis. Em uma palavra, permita que eu viva apenas para obedecer a Ti, apenas para am\u00e1-Lo, apenas para dar-Lhe prazer. Sei que, de fato, devo muito a Ti e que Tu me colocaste sob grandes obriga\u00e7\u00f5es: ser\u00e1 pouco se eu me consumir e me desgastar por Ti.<\/p>

VISITA A MARIA<\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0S\u00e3o Bernardo diz que Maria \u00e9 aquela arca celestial na qual, se nos refugiarmos, certamente seremos libertados do naufr\u00e1gio da condena\u00e7\u00e3o eterna: \"Ela \u00e9 a arca na qual escapamos do naufr\u00e1gio\". A Arca na qual No\u00e9 escapou do naufr\u00e1gio geral do mundo era, de fato, um tipo de Maria. Mas Hesychius diz que Maria \u00e9 uma arca mais espa\u00e7osa, mais forte e mais compassiva. Apenas alguns homens e alguns animais foram recebidos e salvos pela Arca de No\u00e9; mas Maria, nossa Arca, recebe todos os que se refugiam sob seu manto e, com certeza, os salva. Infelizes ser\u00edamos se n\u00e3o tiv\u00e9ssemos Maria! Mas ainda assim, minha rainha, quantos est\u00e3o perdidos! E por qu\u00ea? Porque n\u00e3o recorreram a ti. E quem se perderia se tivesse recorrido a V\u00f3s?<\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Ejac<\/em>. Concedei, Maria Sant\u00edssima, que possamos sempre recorrer a v\u00f3s!<\/p>

ORA\u00c7\u00c3O DE CONCLUS\u00c3O<\/a><\/p>

Medita\u00e7\u00e3o noturna:\u00a0\u00a0A PR\u00c1TICA DO AMOR DE JESUS CRISTO\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/p>

\"A caridade n\u00e3o suspeita mal, n\u00e3o se alegra com a iniquidade, mas se regozija com a verdade.\"<\/em><\/p>

XXXVIII. AQUELE QUE AMA JESUS CRISTO DESEJA O QUE JESUS CRISTO DESEJA<\/p>

Medita\u00e7\u00e3o I:
<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Deus deseja que O amemos de todo o cora\u00e7\u00e3o: Amar\u00e1s o Senhor teu Deus de todo o teu cora\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em>. \u2014 (Matt. xxii. 37).\u00a0 That person loves Jesus Christ with his whole heart who says to Him with the Apostle: Senhor, o que voc\u00ea quer que eu fa\u00e7a?<\/em> \u2014 (Acts ix. 6).\u00a0 Lord, signify to me what Thou wilt have me do; for I desire to perform all.\u00a0 And let us be persuaded that whilst we desire what God desires, we desire what is best for ourselves; for assuredly God only wishes what is best for us.\u00a0 St. Vincent de Paul said: \u201cConformity with the will of God is the treasure of a Christian and the remedy for all evils; since it comprises abnegation of self and union with God and all virtues.\u201d\u00a0 In this, then, is all perfection: Senhor, o que voc\u00ea quer que eu fa\u00e7a?<\/em>\u00a0 Jesus Cristo nos promete que nem um fio de cabelo de sua cabe\u00e7a perecer\u00e1<\/em> \u2014 (Luke xxi. 18), which is as much as to say, that the Lord rewards us for every good thought we have of pleasing Him, and for every tribulation embraced with patience in conformity to His holy will.\u00a0 St. Teresa says: \u201cThe Lord never sends a trial without remunerating it with some favour as often as we accept it with resignation.\u201d<\/p>

Medita\u00e7\u00e3o II:
<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But our conformity to the Divine will must be entire, without any reserve, and constant, without withdrawal.\u00a0 In this consists the height of perfection; and to this, I repeat, all our thoughts, all our desires, all our works, and all our prayers ought to tend. \u00a0Some souls given to prayer, on reading of the ecstasies of St. Teresa and St. Philip Neri, come to wish to enjoy themselves these supernatural unions. \u00a0Such wishes must be banished as contrary to humility; if we really desire to be saints, we must aspire after true union with God, which is to unite our will entirely to the will of God. \u00a0St. Teresa said: \u201cThose persons are deceived who fancy that union with God consists in ecstasies, raptures, and sensible enjoyments of Him. \u00a0It consists in nothing else than in submitting our will to the will of God; and this submission is perfect when our will is detached from everything, and so completely united with that of God that all its movements depend solely on the will of God. \u00a0This is the real and essential union which I have always sought after, and continually beg of the Lord.\u201d \u00a0And then she adds: \u201cOh, how many of us say this, and seem to ourselves to desire nothing besides this; but, miserable creatures that we are, how few of us attain to it.\u201d\u00a0 Such, indeed, is the undeniable truth; many of us say: O Lord! I give Thee my will, I desire nothing but what Thou desirest, \u2013 but, in the event of some trying occurrence, we know not how to yield calmly to the Divine will. \u00a0And this is the source of our continually complaining that we are unfortunate in the world, and that we are the butt of every misfortune, and so of our dragging on an unhappy life.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Medita\u00e7\u00e3o matinal:\u00a0 VI. COMO CONVERSAR CONT\u00cdNUA E FAMILIARMENTE COM DEUS<\/em><\/b><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Assim que cair em alguma falha, levante os olhos para Deus, fa\u00e7a um ato de amor e, com uma humilde confiss\u00e3o de sua falha, espere com toda a certeza o perd\u00e3o Dele, dizendo a Ele: Senhor, eis que aquele que tu amas est\u00e1 doente<\/em>. Entre amigos que se amam sinceramente, muitas vezes acontece que, quando um desagrada o outro e depois se humilha e pede perd\u00e3o, sua amizade se torna mais forte do que nunca.<\/p>

Medita\u00e7\u00e3o I:
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 Assim que voc\u00ea cometer alguma falha, levante os olhos para Deus, fa\u00e7a um ato de amor e, com uma humilde confiss\u00e3o de sua falha, espere seguramente por Seu perd\u00e3o, dizendo a Ele: Senhor, eis que aquele que tu amas est\u00e1 doente<\/em>. \u2014 (John xi. 3), that heart which Thou dost love is sick, is full of sores: curai a minha alma, pois pequei contra v\u00f3s<\/em>. \u2014 (Ps. xl. 5).\u00a0 Thou seekest after penitent sinners; behold, here is one at Thy feet, who has come in search of Thee.\u00a0 The evil is done already; what have I now to do?\u00a0 Thou wilt not have me lose courage: after this my sin Thou dost still love me, and I too love Thee.\u00a0 Yes, my God, I love Thee with all my heart; I repent of the displeasure I have given Thee; I purpose never to offend any more.\u00a0 Thou Who art that God, misericordioso e piedoso, paciente e de muita compaix\u00e3o<\/em> \u2014 (Ps. lxxxv. 5), forgive me; make me to hear what Thou didst say to Magdalen: Seus pecados lhe s\u00e3o perdoados<\/em> \u2014 (Luke vii. 48), and give me strength to be faithful unto Thee for the time to come.
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Para que voc\u00ea n\u00e3o perca a coragem nesse momento, olhe para Jesus na cruz, ofere\u00e7a Seus m\u00e9ritos ao Pai Eterno e, assim, espere com certeza o perd\u00e3o, j\u00e1 que, por sua causa, Ele n\u00e3o poupou nem mesmo seu pr\u00f3prio Filho<\/em>. \u2014 (Rom. viii. 32).\u00a0 Say to Him with confidence: Olhe para a face de seu Cristo<\/em>. \u2014 (Ps. lxxxiii. 10).\u00a0 My God, behold Thy Son, dead for my sake; and for the love of that Son forgive me!\u00a0 Attend well, devout soul, to the instruction commonly given by masters of the spiritual life.\u00a0 After unfaithful conduct you must at once have recourse to God, though you may have repeated your unfaithfulness a hundred times in a day.\u00a0 But after having recourse to the Lord, be at once in peace.\u00a0 Otherwise, whilst you remain cast down and disturbed at the fault you have committed, your converse with God will be small; your trust in Him will fail; your desire to love Him grow cold; and you will be little able to go forward in the way of the Lord.\u00a0 On the other hand, by having immediate recourse to God to ask forgiveness, and to promise Him amendment, your very faults will serve to advance you further in divine love.\u00a0 Between friends who sincerely love, it often happens that when one has displeased the other and then humbles himself and seeks pardon, their friendship becomes thereby stronger than ever.\u00a0 Do you likewise; see to it that your very faults serve to bind you yet closer in love to your God.<\/p>

Medita\u00e7\u00e3o II:
<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In any kind of doubt, either on your own account or that of others, never cease to act towards your God with a confidence like to that of faithful friends, who consult together on every matter. \u00a0So should you take counsel with Him, and beseech Him to enlighten you that you may decide on what will be most pleasing to Him; Put those words in my mouth, and strengthen the resolution in my heart. <\/em>\u2014 (Judith ix. 18). \u00a0Lord, tell me what Thou wouldst have me to do or to answer; and thus will I act. \u00a0Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth. \u2014 <\/em>(1 Kings iii. 10).
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Use towards God also the freedom of recommending not only your own needs, but also those of others. \u00a0How agreeable will it be to God that sometimes you forget even your own interests to speak to Him of the advancement of His glory, of the miseries of others, especially of those who groan in affliction, of those souls, His spouses, who in Purgatory sigh after the vision of Himself, and of poor sinners who are living destitute of His grace!\u00a0 For these especially say to Him: Lord, Thou Who art so amiable and worthy of infinite love, how dost Thou, then, endure to see such a number of souls in the world, on whom Thou hast bestowed so many favours, and who yet will not know Thee? \u00a0Ah, my God, object of all love, make Thyself known, make Thyself loved!\u00a0 Hallowed be thy name! \u00a0Thy Kingdom come!<\/em> \u00a0May Thy Name be adored and loved by all! \u00a0May Thy love reign in all hearts! \u00a0Ah, let me not depart without granting me some grace for those unfaithful souls for whom I pray.<\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Esteja certo de que, ainda que no cumprimento de seus deveres di\u00e1rios voc\u00ea tenha de se dedicar \u00e0s ocupa\u00e7\u00f5es mais insignificantes, o fiel cumprimento delas certamente o tornar\u00e1 um santo. O Senhor n\u00e3o exige de voc\u00ea v\u00f4os elevados de contempla\u00e7\u00e3o ou penit\u00eancias formid\u00e1veis: tudo o que Ele exige \u00e9 que voc\u00ea realize bem todas as suas a\u00e7\u00f5es.<\/p>

Medita\u00e7\u00e3o I:
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Para fazer um breve resumo do que j\u00e1 foi dito, n\u00e3o deixarei de sugerir uma pr\u00e1tica devota por meio da qual voc\u00ea poder\u00e1 realizar todas as suas a\u00e7\u00f5es di\u00e1rias de maneira agrad\u00e1vel a Deus.
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Ao acordar pela manh\u00e3, que seu primeiro pensamento seja elevar a mente a Deus, oferecendo \u00e0 Sua gl\u00f3ria tudo o que far\u00e1 ou sofrer\u00e1 no dia, orando para que Ele o ajude com Sua gra\u00e7a. Em seguida, fa\u00e7a seus outros atos matinais de devo\u00e7\u00e3o, atos de a\u00e7\u00e3o de gra\u00e7as e de amor, ora\u00e7\u00f5es e resolu\u00e7\u00f5es para viver esse dia como se fosse o \u00faltimo dia de sua vida. Quando tiver feito esses atos e colocado sua alma no Cora\u00e7\u00e3o de Jesus e sob o manto de Maria, e tiver orado ao Pai Eterno para que, por amor a Jesus e Maria, Ele o proteja durante o dia, tenha o cuidado de, antes de se dedicar a qualquer outra coisa, fazer sua ora\u00e7\u00e3o mental, ou Medita\u00e7\u00e3o, pelo menos por meia hora; e deixe que sua Medita\u00e7\u00e3o especialmente escolhida seja a tristeza e a vergonha que Jesus Cristo sofreu em Sua Paix\u00e3o. Esse \u00e9 o assunto mais querido pelas almas amorosas e o que mais acende o amor divino dentro delas. Se quiser progredir espiritualmente, que tr\u00eas devo\u00e7\u00f5es lhe sejam especialmente caras - a devo\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 Paix\u00e3o de Jesus Cristo, ao Sant\u00edssimo Sacramento e \u00e0 Virgem sempre aben\u00e7oada. <\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Devemos receber com resigna\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o apenas as cruzes que v\u00eam diretamente de Deus, por exemplo, problemas de sa\u00fade, talentos escassos, reveses acidentais da sorte, mas tamb\u00e9m as que v\u00eam indiretamente de Deus e diretamente de nossos semelhantes, por exemplo, persegui\u00e7\u00f5es, roubos, inj\u00farias, pois todas, na realidade, v\u00eam de Deus. Certo dia, Davi foi insultado por um de seus vassalos, chamado Semei, que n\u00e3o apenas o insultou com palavras de desprezo, mas tamb\u00e9m atirou-lhe pedras. Um dos cortes\u00e3os teria imediatamente vingado o insulto cortando a cabe\u00e7a do ofensor, mas Davi respondeu: Deixe-o em paz e amaldi\u00e7oe, pois o Senhor o mandou amaldi\u00e7oar Davi<\/em> \u2014 (2 Kings xvi. 10); or, in others words, God makes use of him to chastise me for my sins, and therefore He allowed him to pursue me with injuries.<\/p>

Medita\u00e7\u00e3o II:
<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Wherefore St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi says that all our prayers should have for their end to obtain from God the grace to follow His holy will in all things. \u00a0Certain souls, greedy of spiritual dainties in prayer, go in search of these banquets of sweet and tender feelings; but courageous souls who seek sincerely to belong wholly to God ask Him only for light to understand His will, and for strength to put it into execution. \u00a0In order to attain to purity of love, it is necessary to submit our will in all things to the will of God: \u201cNever consider yourselves,\u201d said St. Francis de Sales, \u201cto have arrived at the purity which you ought to have, as long as your will is not cheerfully obedient, even in things the most repulsive, to the will of God.\u201d \u00a0\u201cBecause,\u201d as St. Teresa remarks, \u201cthe giving up of our will to God draws Him to unite Himself with our lowliness.\u201d \u00a0But this can never be obtained except by means of mental prayer and of continual petitions addressed to the Divine Majesty, nor without a cordial desire to belong entirely to Jesus Christ without reserve.

S\u00e3o Vicente de Paulo disse que a vontade de Deus nunca \u00e9 mais bem cumprida do que quando obedecemos aos nossos superiores. O Esp\u00edrito Santo diz: \u00c9 muito melhor a obedi\u00eancia do que as v\u00edtimas dos tolos<\/em>. \u2014 (Eccles. iv. 17).\u00a0 God is more pleased with the sacrifice we make to Him of our own will, by submitting it to obedience, than with all other sacrifices which we can offer Him; because in other things, as in alms-deeds, fastings, mortifications, and the like, we give of what is ours to God, but in giving Him our will, we give Him everything.\u00a0 So that when we say to God: O Lord, make me know by means of obedience what Thou requirest of me, for I wish to comply with all, \u2013 we have nothing more to offer Him.
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Whoever, therefore, gives himself up to obedience, must needs detach himself totally from his own opinion.\u00a0 \u201cWhat though each one,\u201d says St. Francis de Sales, \u201ctem<\/em> suas pr\u00f3prias opini\u00f5es, a virtude n\u00e3o \u00e9 violada por isso; mas a virtude \u00e9 violada por o anexo<\/em> we have to our own opinions.\u201d\u00a0 But, alas! this attachment is the hardest thing to part with; and hence there are so few persons wholly given to God, because few render a thorough submission to obedience.\u00a0 There are some persons so fondly attached to their own opinion that, on receiving an obedience, although the thing enjoined suits their inclination, yet, from the very fact of its being commanded, they lose all fancy for it, all wish to discharge it; for they find no relish in anything but in following the dictates of their individual will.\u00a0 How different is the conduct of Saints!\u00a0 Their only happiness flows from the execution of what obedience imposes on them.\u00a0 The saintly Jane Frances de Chantal once told her daughters that they might spend the Recreation-day in any manner they chose.\u00a0 When the evening came, they all went to her, to beg most earnestly that she would never again grant them such a permission; for they had never spent such a wearisome day as that on which they had been set free from obedience.<\/p>

<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is a delusion to think that anyone can be possibly better employed than in the discharge of what obedience has imposed. \u00a0St. Francis de Sales says: \u201cTo desert an occupation given by obedience in order to unite ourselves with God by prayer, by reading, or by recollection, would be to withdraw from God to unite ourselves with our own self-love.\u201d \u00a0St. Teresa adds, moreover, that whoever performs any work, even though it be spiritual, yet against obedience, assuredly works by the instigation of the devil, and not by Divine inspiration, as he perhaps flatters himself; \u201cbecause,\u201d says the Saint, \u201cthe inspirations of God always come in company with obedience.\u201d \u00a0To the same effect she says elsewhere: \u201cGod requires nothing more of a soul that is determined to love Him than obedience.\u201d \u00a0\u201cA work done out of obedience,\u201d says Father Rodriguez, \u201coutweighs every other that we can imagine.\u201d \u00a0To gather a straw off the ground from obedience is of greater merit than a protracted prayer, or a discipline to blood, done out of our own head. \u00a0This caused St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi to say that she would rather be engaged in some exercise from obedience than in prayer; \u201cbecause in obedience I am certain of the will of God, whereas I am by no means so certain of it in any other exercise.\u201d \u00a0According to all spiritual masters, it is better to leave off any devout exercise through obedience than to continue it without obedience. \u00a0The Most Blessed Virgin Mary revealed once to St. Bridget that he who relinquishes some mortification through obedience reaps a twofold profit; since he has already obtained the merit of the mortification by the good-will to do it, and he also gains the merit of obedience by foregoing it. \u00a0One day the famous Father Francis Arias went to see the Blessed John of Avila, his intimate friend, and he found him pensive and sad; he asked him the reason of it, and received this answer: \u201cOh, happy you who live under obedience, and are sure of doing the will of God. \u00a0As for me, who shall warrant me whether I do a thing more pleasing to God in going from village to village, catechising the poor peasants, or in remaining stationary in the confessional to hear every one that presents himself? \u00a0Whereas he that is living under obedience is always sure that whatever he performs by obedience is according to the will of God, or rather that it is what is most acceptable to God.\u201d \u00a0Let this serve as a consolation for all those who live under obedience.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0During the day make frequently an offering of yourself to God, as St. Teresa used to do, saying: \u201cLord, here am I!\u00a0 Do with me what pleaseth Thee!\u00a0 Declare to me Thy will, that I may do it for Thee; I wish to do it thoroughly.\u201d \u00a0Then repeat, as often as you can, acts of love towards God.\u00a0 St. Teresa used also to say that acts of love are the fuel by which the holy love of God is to be kept on fire within the heart.\u00a0 When the Venerable Sister Seraphine of Capri was one day considering that the mule belonging to the convent had not the power of loving God, she expressed her compassion for it thus: \u201cPoor brute; thou neither knowest nor canst love thy God;\u201d and the mule commenced to weep so that the tears fell in streams from its eyes; so likewise do you, when beholding any animal which has not the capacity for knowing or loving God, animate yourself, who can love Him, to make more frequent acts of holy love.\u00a0 Whenever you fall into any fault, humble yourself for it immediately; and, with an act of more fervent love, endeavour to rise again.\u00a0 When anything adverse happens, immediately make an offering to God of what you have to suffer, bringing your will into conformity with God’s will; and ever accustom yourself under all adverse circumstances to repeat these words: \u201cThus does God will; thus I will too.\u201d\u00a0 Acts of resignation are the acts of love that are most precious and acceptable to the Heart of God.<\/p>

<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When you have to decide upon anything, or to give any counsel of importance, first commend yourself to God, and then set about your undertaking, or give your opinion. \u00a0As often as you can during the day, after the example of St. Rose of Lima, repeat the prayer, Deus, in adjutorium meum intende: <\/em>\u201cLord, come to my assistance! \u00a0Do not leave me in my own hands!\u201d \u00a0And for this end frequently turn to the Image of the Crucified, or to that of the Most Holy Mary, which is in your room; and do not omit to make frequent invocations of the Names of Jesus and Mary, especially in time of temptation. \u00a0Since God is infinite goodness, His desire of communicating His graces to us is perfect. \u00a0The Venerable Father Alvarez one day saw our Saviour with His hands full of graces, and going about in search of those to whom He might dispense them. \u00a0But it is His will that we should ask them of Him. \u00a0Ask, and ye shall receive \u2014 <\/em>(John xvi. 24), otherwise He will draw back His hands, whereas, on the contrary, He will willingly open them to those who call upon Him. \u00a0And who is there that hath called upon Him and God despised him by not answering his prayer? \u00a0Who hath called upon him and he hath despised him? <\/em>\u2014 (Ecclus. ii. 12). \u00a0And David tells us that the Lord shows not merely mercy, but great mercy, to those who call upon Him: For thou, O Lord, art sweet and mild and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon thee. <\/em>\u2014 (Ps. lxxxv. 5).
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh, how good and bountiful is the Lord to him who seeks Him lovingly! \u00a0The Lord is good to the soul that seeketh him. \u2014 <\/em>(Lam. iii. 25). \u00a0If He lets Himself be found even by him who seeks Him not \u2013 I was found by them that did not seek me<\/em> \u2014 (Rom. x. 20) \u2013 how much more willingly will He let Himself be found by one who does seek Him \u2013 and seeks Him, too, in order to serve and to love Him!
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To conclude: St. Teresa says that holy souls in this world have to conform themselves by love to what the souls of the Blessed do in Heaven. \u00a0As the Saints in Heaven occupy themselves only with God, and have no other thought or joy than in His glory and in His love, so also must this be the case with you. \u00a0While you are in this world, let God be your only happiness, the only object of your affections, the only end of your actions and desires, until you come to that Eternal Kingdom where your love will be in all things perpetual and complete, and your desires will be perfectly fulfilled and satisfied.<\/p>

<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Para que a obedi\u00eancia seja perfeita, devemos obedecer com a vontade<\/em> e com o julgamento<\/em>. Obedecer com a vontade<\/em> significa obedecer de bom grado, e n\u00e3o por constrangimento, \u00e0 maneira dos escravos; obedecer com o julgamento<\/em> means to conform our judgment to that of the superior, without examining what is commanded.\u00a0 St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi remarks on this: \u201cPerfect obedience demands a soul without judgment.\u201d\u00a0 To the like purpose, St. Philip Neri said that, in order to obey with perfection, it was not enough to execute the thing commanded, but it must be done without reasoning on it; taking it for certain that what is commanded us is for us the most perfect thing we can do, although the opposite may be better before God.
\u00a0 \u00a0 This holds good not merely for Religious, but likewise for seculars living under obedience to their spiritual directors.\u00a0 Let them request their director to prescribe them rules for the guidance of their affairs, both spiritual and temporal; and so they will make sure of doing what is best.\u00a0 St. Philip Neri said: \u201cLet those who are desirous of progressing in the way of God submit themselves to a prudent confessor, whom they should obey as in God’s place.\u00a0 By so doing, we are certain of not having to render an account to God of the actions we perform.\u201d\u00a0 He said, moreover, that we must place faith in the confessor, because the Lord will not permit him to err; that nothing is so sure of cutting off all the snares of the devil as to do the will of others in the performance of good; and that there is nothing more dangerous than to wish to direct ourselves according to our private fancy.\u00a0 In like manner St. Francis de Sales says, in speaking of the direction of the spiritual father as a means of walking securely in the path of perfection: \u201cThis is the maxim of all maxims.\u201d

<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cSeek as ye will,\u201d says the devout Avila, \u201cyou will never so surely find the will of God as in the way of this humble obedience, so much recommended and so practised by all the ancient servants of God.\u201d \u00a0The same thing is affirmed by St. Bernard, St. Bernardine of Sienna, St. Antoninus, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa, John Gerson, and all theologians and masters of the spiritual life; and St. John of the Cross said that to call this truth in question is almost to doubt of the Faith.\u00a0 The words of the Saint are: \u201cNot to be satisfied with what the confessor says is arrogance and a want of faith.\u201d \u00a0Among the maxims of St. Francis de Sales are the two following, most consolatory for scrupulous souls:
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Firstly, a truly obedient soul was never yet lost.
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Secondly, we ought to be satisfied on being told by our spiritual director that we are going on well, without seeking to be convinced of it ourselves.
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is the teaching of many doctors, as of Gerson, St. Antoninus, Cajetanus, Navarrus, Sanchez, Bonacina, Cordovius, Castropalao, and the doctors of Salamanca, with others, that the scrupulous person is bound, under strict obligation, to act in opposition to scruples, when from such scruples there is reason to apprehend grievous harm happening to soul or body, such as the loss of health, or of intellect; wherefore scrupulous persons ought to have greater scruple at not obeying the confessor than at acting in opposition to their scruples. \u00a0To sum up, therefore, all that has been said in this chapter, our salvation and perfection consist: (1) In denying ourselves; (2) In following the will of God; (3) In praying Him always to give us strength to do both one and the other.
