And Jesus was asleep\u2026<\/p>

In the midst of the storm\u2026 the King of the universe was asleep.<\/p>

This is perhaps one of the most profound passages in Sacred Scripture, owing to the enigmatic yet instructive meaning concealed within it.<\/p>

In just a few words, it represents several mysteries of our Faith: the constant guidance of Divine Providence, the problem of the existence of evil, and the personal response that man must make when confronted with the challenges of this world.<\/p>

The complete text of the Gospel according to Saint Mark reads as follows:<\/p>

\u201cAnd he saith to them that day, when evening was come: Let us pass over to the other side. And sending away the multitude, they take him even as he was in the ship: and there were other ships with him.<\/em><\/p>

And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that the ship was filled.<\/em><\/p>

And he was in the hinder part of the ship, sleeping upon a pillow: and they awake him, and say to him: Master, doth it not concern thee that we perish?<\/em><\/p>

And rising up, he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea: Peace, be still. And the wind ceased: and there was made a great calm.<\/em><\/p>

And he said to them: Why are you fearful? have you not faith yet?<\/em><\/p>

And they feared exceedingly: and they said one to another: Who is this (think you) that both wind and sea obey him?\u201d<\/em> (Mark 4:35\u201341)<\/p>

But why have I chosen to mention this passage on this Solemnity of Christ the King, which we celebrate today? Because it contains a clear lesson that enables us to understand how Christ reigns, what kind of King He is, how we ought to honor Him, and how we must conduct ourselves in the face of the challenges of this life.<\/p>

For years, both the hierarchy that has usurped the Church and modern society have been telling Christ to depart from our schools, our governments, and our lives. And, like the gentleman that He is, He is withdrawing, allowing us to witness the consequences of His absence. Here, then, we find our first point for consideration. In the words of Monsignor Henri Delassus: \u201cWhen Christ does not reign through the blessings of His presence, He reigns through the evils of His absence<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>

Now, what few people notice when reading the Gospel passage I have just mentioned is this: The place where Christ and His disciples were going when the storm overtook them. To discover this, we must read a little further, in the subsequent verses: they were heading toward a pagan region, the land of the Gerasenes.<\/p>

Most of the Apostles were familiar with currents and waters. Many of them were fishermen. They knew how to anticipate the signs of the sea and the sky. This demonstrates that the storm truly caught them by surprise. It must have arisen with extraordinary speed and unexpected violence. It was almost as though something was desperately trying to prevent them from reaching the shore.<\/p>

And why is it important to observe that Christ deliberately chose to go with His disciples to that particular region? Because there He would engage in one of His most famous confrontations with evil: He was going to deliver the possessed man of Gerasa, who was tormented by a legion of demons.<\/p>

How many soldiers comprised a legion in the time of Our Lord? Approximately five thousand to six thousand warriors. Yes, within the body of that poor, beast-like man, some five thousand to six thousand demons had made their dwelling. This is why the Gospel tells us:<\/p>

\u201cAnd when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the monuments a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling in the tombs, and no man now could bind him, not even with chains. For having been often bound with fetters and chains, he had burst the chains, and broken the fetters in pieces, and no man could tame him.\u201d (Mark 5:2\u20134<\/em>)<\/p>

Clearly, then, there were five thousand to six thousand warriors within that body. Not even all the men of that region together could have subdued such entities. Only a stronger King could accomplish such a feat: the \u201cSon of the Most High God<\/em>,\u201d as that poor wretch himself acknowledged, having been stripped by the power of evil of both his humanity and his clothing.<\/p>

A King whom \u201cboth wind and sea obeyed<\/em>.\u201d That was Jesus Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who had come to extend His salvation to those dwelling in the \u201cshadow of death<\/em>\u201d of pagan society \u2014a society that reduced human beings to a subhuman condition, almost on a level with the swine into which the demons begged to be sent.<\/p>

And this, my dear brethren, is how evil operates. It even makes use of the forces of nature to dissuade us from doing the will of God. And when it fails to achieve its purpose in this way, it attacks through supernatural means, if God permits it, so that His presence and protection may be manifested.<\/p>

This is precisely the lesson Christ has given us: if you remain with Me, the King of kings, I shall increase your faith and strengthen you, so that you may persevere in doing the will of God.<\/p>

St. John, in the Apocalypse \u2014which contains a prophecy concerning the last times\u2014 includes among those condemned for grave sins the \u201ccowards and the liars<\/em>\u201d. This indicates that, in the last times, there will be a great increase in both lying and cowardice.<\/p>

Cowardice in a Christian is a grave sin because it reveals a lack of faith in Christ, who has demonstrated that He is the One whom \u201cboth wind and sea obey<\/em>.\u201d Therefore, fear is neither useful nor even permissible when it leads us to abandon our Christian duty.<\/p>

On one occasion, Julius Caesar refused to allow his companions to give way to fear. \u201cWhat are you afraid of? You are sailing with Caesar and his good star<\/em>,\u201d he told them. How much calmer, then, ought we to be when we walk with Jesus Christ, the Creator of the stars!<\/p>

Now, considering all the evil and disorder that exist in modern society today, Christ appears to be a poor King \u2014a King who seems scarcely to reign at all. For if men obeyed Him as their King, the world would be a better place. But the kingdom of God is not always welcome, because it overturns the systems we cling to even when those systems profit from darkness, like the system of the people of the region of Gerasa, who begged Christ to leave.<\/p>

A great part of the world does not even know Christ. Another part knows Him and rejects Him, like the jews who said: \u201cNolumus Hunc regnare super nos<\/em>\u201d (\u201cWe will not have this man to reign over us<\/em>.\u201d) (Luke 19:14)<\/p>

Finally, another part acknowledges Him with words but denies Him through its actions. These are the cowardly Christians.<\/p>

Yet there is something else that Christ reminds us of: He does not cease to be King so long as He retains the power to judge and punish evildoers. And He will most certainly exercise that power against the modernists who admit that Christ is King in a certain sense, but, naturally, only in the sense that suits them, so that they may refuse to fulfill His will.<\/p>

Among other things, His will is that He be worshipped as the angels worship Him in Heaven, that is, with one voice: \u201cuna voce dicentes\u201d<\/em>, as the Preface of the Mass declares.<\/p>

We have a King, my dear brethren! Our Faith is neither the Novus Ordo nor a democracy! Our King must reign in the Church and in society.<\/p>

As Cardinal Pie of Poitiers declared: \u201cWe shall not change the very nature of things: Jesus Christ the King is the cornerstone of the entire social order. Without Him, everything collapses, everything is divided, and everything perishes<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>

Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in his encyclical Quas Primas<\/em> in opposition to secularism. He wrote these words: \u201cWe rightly deplore what is called secularism, with its errors and impious designs. You know well, Venerable Brethren, that this impiety did not arise in a single day, but had long been festering in the very heart of society. Men began by denying the sovereignty of Christ over all nations; they denied the Church the right, founded upon the very right of Christ Himself, to teach mankind, to make laws, and to govern peoples, so as to lead them to eternal happiness. Then, little by little, the religion of Christ was equated with other false religions and shamefully reduced to their level. It was subsequently subjected to the civil power and to the arbitrary permission of rulers and magistrates.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

As we listen to these words, we can see not only how far society has departed from a true understanding of reality, but also how greatly those who have usurped the Catholic hierarchy have contributed to the catastrophic crisis we now witness in the Church.<\/p>

This contribution has come about precisely through the very thing the Pope denounced in his encyclical: that \u201cspirit of secularism<\/em>\u201d which entered even the Church and is also known as liberalism.<\/p>

Liberalism is a kind of cowardice. It denies the social reign of Christ and His authority over human society, returning modern society \u2014to the delight of Lucifer\u2014 to an animal-like condition even worse than that of the Gerasene possessed or the swine into which the demons were sent.<\/p>

My dear brethren, if there is one thing that the Solemnity of Christ the King personally reminds me of, it is that we are called to the heroic courage of trusting in the Will of our King, who guides the universe with His providential hand and still retains the power to judge the world and bring about that wondrous truth expressed by Saint Paul: \u201conde abundou o pecado, superabundou a gra\u00e7a<\/em>.\u201d (Romans 5:20)<\/p>

Throughout my entire life, and especially during these ten years of priesthood which I commemorate today, I have been a witness to the miracles of Our Lord.<\/p>

We are all invited to become witnesses to these miracles through the only gift we can offer our God: the gift of our trust in His Divine Will and the conformity of our own will to His.<\/p>

In John 16:4, we read that Christ said:<\/p>

\u201cBut these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>

Likewise, in Luke 21:28, we read:<\/p>

\u201cBut when these things begin to come to pass, look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is at hand.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>

These words of Christ unmistakably show us that He knew what was to come. They teach us that, despite our tribulations, He \u201cworketh all things together unto good, to such as, according to his purpose, are called to be saints,\u201d as Saint Paul teaches us<\/em>. (Romans 8:28)<\/p>

They also assure us that He will be with us until the end of time.<\/p>

The Church \u2014the \u201cBarque of Saint Peter\u201d\u2014 has already endured many storms, and today she is certainly passing through one of the worst. The waves are flooding the boat, and it truly seems that we are perishing.<\/p>

It also seems that Christ has retained His youthful habit of sleeping through such storms, while He continues to find cowardice as repugnant as ever. He has said so plainly:<\/p>

\u201cBut because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold, nor hot, I will begin to vomit thee out of my mouth.\u201d<\/em> (Apocalypse 3:16)<\/p>

Pedes in terra, ad sidera visus<\/em>, my dear brethren!<\/p>

Our mission is to imitate the sunflowers: to keep our roots firmly planted in the earth while fixing our gaze upon God. In this way, we may heed the Lord’s words to Pilate, so we will be \u201cof the truth<\/em>\u201d, listen to His voice, and follow His Will. (John 18:37)<\/p>

\"For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and in the last day He shall stand over the dust. And I shall be clothed again with my skin, and in my flesh I shall see my God. Whom I myself shall see, and my eyes shall behold, and not another<\/em>.\u201d (Job 19:25\u201327)<\/p>

The only thing left for us to do is to beseech Him:<\/p>
