If you are coming here with any intention less than that, leave—and leave quickly.”

Today we celebrate the Feast of All Saints, and obviously not only those who have been canonized, but all the saints in Heaven. I mention this because I want us to realize that what St. Alphonsus demanded is not something impossible. Indeed, it is imperative for every one of us to leave this world in the state of grace because, as the Apocalypse teaches us, “nothing defiled shall enter into” the Kingdom of Heaven.

Now, I could speak for hours about the texts of the Mass we have heard today, because they are beautiful and profound. In times of persecution, those who are able to overcome their trials faithfully will produce greater fruits of sanctity, and the number of righteous souls who will one day populate and enjoy Heaven will increase.

The Lord’s patience is not an endorsement of evil. Rather, He allows time for souls to repent, persevere, and attain holiness, even amid the greatest trials.

“Blessed Are They Who Suffer Persecution for Justice’ Sake”

This Beatitude is particularly interesting because it shares its promised reward with only one other Beatitude: “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” That other Beatitude is: “Blessed are the poor in spirit.”

According to the teaching traditionally attributed to St. Francis, being “poor in spirit” refers to those who “became poor as a commitment to the Holy Ghost”; that is, those who detach themselves from material possessions and worldly attachments in order to follow more freely the inspirations of the Holy Ghost.

Now, is there a relationship between “persecution for justice’ sake” and “poverty in spirit”? There must be, for both Beatitudes promise the same reward. And if there is a relationship, what is it?

Well, the relationship is TRUST IN GOD’S WILL.

The person who suffers persecution for justice’ sake accepts that trial because he knows that God is just and will render justice unto him. He knows that the universe is a masterpiece of Divine Providence and that nothing escapes the knowledge or permission of the Father, Who has ordered all things according to His eternal wisdom.

In the same way, a person who detaches himself from the illusion that he can exercise perfect control over everything through the possession of material goods lives out, in a particularly profound way, the ideal of perfect trust in God.

In both cases, by surrendering personal claims and material attachments, the saints gain everything. They receive as their reward the possession of the Kingdom of Heaven.

What is holiness, my dear friends? Conformity with the Will of God.

And what is happiness? To do what God wants and to want what God does.

That is the very heart of the teaching of Jesus Christ. All the lessons He taught us revolve around this spiritual commitment, which must be translated into every aspect of our daily lives, just as Christ Himself did, using examples drawn from the human circumstances of His own time.

For example, most people picture Jesus as a carpenter bent over a workbench in a woodshop. But the Greek word Mark uses for His trade does not simply mean “carpenter,” and an early Christian writer gives us a glimpse of the kind of work He performed.

In Mark 6:3, the people of Nazareth ask: “Is not this the τέκτων?”

The Greek word τέκτων means a builder or craftsman. It could describe someone who worked with wood, but also someone who worked with stone and other materials. Our English word “architect” ultimately derives from the Greek ἀρχιτέκτων, combining ἀρχι– (chief) and τέκτων (builder).

This broader meaning fits the world in which Jesus grew up. Most houses in Galilee were built primarily of stone. And just a few miles from Nazareth, Herod Antipas was rebuilding the city of Sepphoris during the childhood of Christ. Many scholars believe that a builder from Nazareth could have found work there, although the Gospels never tell us that Jesus worked on that particular project.

Now, listen to the way Jesus speaks:

“A wise man builds his house upon a rock.”

“No man builds a tower without first counting the cost.”

“The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner.”

His teaching is filled with the language of a builder.

Then comes a historical clue. Around A.D. 150, St. Justin Martyr, an early Christian apologist who came from Samaria, wrote that Jesus worked as a craftsman among men, making ploughs and yokes.

In Matthew 11, Christ says: “Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you. Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. For my yoke is sweet, and my burden light.”

The Greek word translated as “sweet” is χρηστός. It does not mean weightless. It means good or well-suited.

A yoke was not a one-size-fits-all instrument. A well-made one was shaped to fit the neck and shoulders of the animal so that it could pull without being wounded.

There is a legend that says that the sign above the workshop of Jesus read: “My yokes fit well.”

It may be only a legend, but the image beautifully captures the meaning. As the Italians say: Se non è vero, è ben Trovato (“Even if it is not true, it is well conceived.”)

My dear brothers and sisters, Christ never promised us a life without a yoke. He promised us a yoke fashioned by the hands of a Builder Who knows exactly where we are wounded.

The Man Who once fashioned yokes for oxen is still shaping one for you.

He does not necessarily remove the load; He makes it fit. He will never permit you to be tested beyond what His grace can sustain. And if He allows you to experience all the different crosses of this world, in the end, you will realize that the very cross He gave you from the beginning was the one through which you could attain Heaven in the best possible way.

And to possess that certainty from the beginning —to trust that the Cross permitted by God is not an obstacle to our salvation, but can become the very instrument through which we attain it— is the beginning of holiness.

May God grant us the grace to trust always in Him, as all the saints did, and to remain faithful unto the end, as they remained faithful.

Amém.

In many of his letters to the novices, St. Alphonsus used to say: “The Congregation is a place for those who want to become saints.
